During most of his last 30 years, pianist Teddy Wilson was usually featured leading trios. In that setting, Wilson tended to sound very comfortable and predictable. This CD has Wilson in a couple more inspired outings, both recorded in England. The first three numbers are played in a quartet with clarinetist Randy Colville, while the other six songs are with a quintet featuring clarinetist Dave Shepherd and vibraphonist Ronnie Gleaves. The songs are all familiar standards that Wilson had been playing since the late '30s, but the two clarinetists keep the sparks flying and push Wilson a bit. The uptempo pieces in particular are exciting, making this set well worth picking up by swing collectors and Teddy Wilson fans. ~ Scott Yanow
This CD contains songs from two separate performances recorded in June 1967 in Manchester, England. The first show features Wilson with Randy Colville, Ian Taylor and Dave Edwards. The second show features Wilson with Dave Shepherd, Ronnie Gleaves, Peter
Personnel: Dave Shepherd, Randy Colville (clarinet); Ronnie Gleaves (vibraphone); Johnny Richardson (drums).

Quartets & Quintets album
$13.34 Only Everything, David Sanborn's second album for Decca, feels like part two of his debut for the label, 2008's Here & Gone. That set was a tribute to Ray Charles and Hank Crawford -- the alto saxophonist who played with Charles in the '50s and early '60s, and influenced Sanborn tremendously. That set featured loads of vocals and tightly arranged tunes that were indicative of the performances of Charles' bands. Only Everything delves into more of that territory, but this time, Sanborn reflects more heavily on Crawford and David "Fathead" Newman, another legendary Charles ace from roughly the same period. The charts here allow for more soloing and offer a looser, more intimate, spontaneous feel. It contains only two vocal appearances: one by Joss Stone on a punchy "Let the Good Times Roll," and one by James Taylor in a unique interpretation of "Hallelujah I Love Her So." There are two different bands here -- one a septet with a horn section, the other an organ trio. Steve Gadd handles all the ...

| | Miles Davis Sketches Of Spain CD (1960) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Quartets & Quintets album
$6.49 The crown jewel of the epic Evans/Davis triptych that began with MILES AHEAD and PORGY AND BESS, SKETCHES OF SPAIN is as emotionally compelling as any performance in the trumpeter's remarkable body of works. Combining as it does the emotional gravity of two cultures--the deep song of flamenco music and the rich lament of the blues--SKETCHES OF SPAIN is a musical hybrid of enormous power and beauty. Gil Evans' immense canvas of orchestral colors inspires some of Davis' most deeply felt solo flights. He paints vast vistas of velvety, shimmering night sounds, and through it all runs the mountainous backbone of Spain's native rhythms and chants.
The centerpiece of SKETCHES OF SPAIN is the Evans/Davis treatment of the second movement of Rodrigo's "Concierto De Aranjuez." Evans' charts engage Davis in a shifting, insistent dialogue, italicizing the trumpeter's subtle variations and timbral ecstasies with magnificent orchestral ...

| | Blue Skies For Black Hearts Serenades And Hand Grenades CD (2008)
Quartets & Quintets CD music
$12.85 Pat Kearns writes sweetly sad pop tunes that are catchy enough that you can't help but wonder why the poor guy can't cheer himself up. As leader of Blue Skies for Black Hearts, Kearns clearly knows how to rock out when he's in the mood -- "She'll Follow Me" attests to that -- but that doesn't happen all that often on the group's third album, Serenades and Hand Grenades, which is devoted to the more polished and carefully crafted side of their musical personality. Kearns and his bandmates even brought in a horn section and a string ensemble to fancy up tunes like "Jenny and Steve," "Someday There Will Be Better Days," and "Ambition," and while this was produced on an indie budget, Kearns (who runs the studio where this was recorded, PermaPress Recording) clearly knows how to give this music the appearance of a grand scale, and this album sounds impressive indeed. But while Kearns and his cohorts have a knack with a melody and can make them into something in the studio, Serenades and Hand Grenades needs something a bit more, and these songs are missing the bite, wit, or drama that would ...
