Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French Melvin Van Peebles's unusual comedy follows the life of a white bigot who wakes up one morning to find himself transformed into a black man. His new life teaches him much about the repugnant nature of racism. Melvin Van Peebles follows up his unjustly overlooked THE STORY OF A THREE-DAY PASS with this blunt, original, and highly unusual satire of race in America. Jeff Gerber (Godfrey Cambridge) is a white middle-class racist who makes a living as an insurance salesman. After work, he takes the bus home to spend time with his wife, Althea (Estelle Parsons), and his two children. One day Jeff awakens to find that he has inexplicably metamorphosed into a black man. He unsuccessfully attempts to powder his skin and return its pallor, and he visits a doctor hoping to discover the cause for his remarkable transformation. In the meantime, he must continue with his daily routine, which becomes a painful lesson in the repugnant nature of racism. Encountering prejudice almost everywhere he goes, Jeff is eventually seduced by a curious white coworker and is bought out by his skeptical neighbors, who fear that his presence will depreciate the value of their homes. All the while, he yearns for a return to his normal self, for the days when he was treated like a human being. Van Peebles, working from a highly charged script by Herman Roucher, approaches his important theme using a new approach--comedy--and comes up with a provocative, landmark cinematic achievement. Estelle Parsons also appears in films such as BONNIE AND CLYDE, DICK TRACY, and BOYS ON THE SIDE.

$19.69 Although generally not as highly regarded by the critics as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, or the Who, the Kinks may well have influenced far more musicians. The three-chord sledgehammer proto-metal burst of teenage lust called "You Really Got Me," the Kinks' third single and first hit, touched off a garage band explosion, which in turn influenced the rise of punk a decade later. Blessed with an astute songwriter in Ray Davies, the Kinks followed the template of "You Really Got Me" for a couple years, racking up hits with "All Day and All of the Night," "Tired of Waiting for You," and "Till the End of the Day." But Davies had more than one card in his pocket, and he blossomed into a sharp social satirist ("Dedicated Follower of Fashion"). By the time the album The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society was released in 1968, Davies had become a master of elegiac studies in English suburbia. The gender-bending "Lola" was a big hit in 1970 and the Kinks entered the video era in 1983 with "Come Dancing" and its memorable video. The Ultimate Collection spans the group's career in two discs, including the hits, B-sides, and key album tracks. ~ Steve Leggett
Arguably the finest and most expansive Kinks collection on the market! The first disc of this double-disc begins with their third single and first No. 1, the insistent 'You Really Got Me', then races through the glory years ...
| | Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song DVD (1971)
Watermelon Man review
$10.29 Putting black cinema on the map and ushering in the legendary Blaxploitation genre of the 1970s, Melvin Van Peebles's SWEET SWEETBACK'S BAADASSSSS SONG is a thrilling work of entertainment as well as a historically and ideologically significant essay on the issue of race. The film tells the story of Sweetback (Van Peebles), an apolitical black sex performer who becomes a reluctant picaresque hero when he kills the two white policemen who brutalized a young prisoner for racist reasons. On the run to Mexico, Sweetback encounters all manner of provocatively stereotypical ...

$9.59 Nicholas Cage stars in this dramatic comedy from director Gore Verbinski (PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL), once again playing a handsome bachelor in a post mid-life crisis (ADAPTATION, THE FAMILY MAN, MATCHSTICK MEN). The son of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Robert Spritz (Michael Caine), David Spritz (Cage) is a successful Chicago weatherman who for reasons beyond his understanding, frequently gets fast-food thrown at him on the street. Could the reason for this be that David's job, though lucrative, requires little exertion, allowing him to occupy what even he admits is a relatively easy existence? Living in the shadow of his father's greatness, and in the wake of a recent marital separation, David messily struggles to impress his father, reconnect to his estranged wife (Hope Davis), and save his troubled kids (Gemmenne de la Peña, Nicholas Hoult), all while trying to land a coveted job in New York. David's efforts to reach and protect his kids feel realistic in that they are heartfelt, but not always successful. Likewise, David's marriage contains tangible flaws that reveal themselves in interesting ways.
THE WEATHER MAN contains just as much sadness as it does comedy, and does a good job of finding one in the other. Some of the film's most heartbreaking ...

$9.15 Harry Stone (Danny Aiello) is in quite a pickle. After a succession of box-office bombs, the film director has produced a glossy Hollywood flick about a group of plucky young teenagers and their space-traveling gherkin that is being deemed a huge hit. Ironically, the film stinks, and Harry is terrified of being considered a sellout and an artistic failure. On the eve of the movie's premiere, he returns to New York after a long sojourn ...
