Film By Ken Burns - Lewis & Clark: The Journey Of The Corps Of Discovery Movie Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Lewis & Clark Good price and delivery Submitted by Soaringeagle51 (Cedar Rapids, IA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery A fair, evenhanded retelling of this exciting expedition. The personalities and character of not only Lewis and Clark are revealed, but those of other corps members and the Native Americans which they contact. Human interest stories, like shipping prairie dogs back to Jefferson, are endearing. The negotiations between the corps and Native Americans are a microcosm foretelling both the good and bad that will follow on a larger scale. I sincerely wish Jefferson's prediction that it would take 200 years to settled the west, rather than the actual 70, hand come to pass. The majestic, pristine, awe-inspiring beauty seen through the Corps of Discovery eyes would have been witnessed by countless others. But unfortunately for us, this beauty was trampled under the heels of "progress". Submitted by a reviewer (Houston, Texas) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
Good, But Not Great While the photography is excellent, the storyline suffer's from lack of research. For example, Sgt. Patrick Gass is portrayed speaking with an Irish accent. As a reenactor who was filmed during the portage of the Great Falls, I was disappointed in the repetitious scenes of sunsets, long range shots of inadequate camps, and most importantly the lack of period art or even early photograph of the scenery along the entire trail to supplement the dialog. Interview's with purported "scholars" left much to be desired.
The film is good, but not a great resource to learn about the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Film By Ken Burns - Lewis & Clark: The Journey Of The Corps Of Discovery movie DVD
$24.15 A movie based on a PowerPoint presentation by a former presidential candidate may not sound exciting, but once AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH hits its stride viewers may be surprised how compelling the subject matter proves to be. While many high-ranking political figures continue to argue about global warming, Al Gore has plunged headlong into a serious wake-up call for the planet with a series of lectures about the problem. It's on one of these lectures that this movie from director Davis Guggenheim is based. Guggenheim breaks up Gore's delivery by illustrating his points with film footage, much of which features the former Democratic nominee exploring the globe as he examines the effects of global warming. Gore's speech is neatly divided between calm recitations of the facts about the issue and several stories of a personal nature. His skills as an orator are considerable, and it's hard not to be alarmed by most of what he has to say. Indeed, as Gore relates tales of melting polar icecaps, rising global temperatures, and the reluctance of political leaders to do something about the problem, the film takes on an ...
| | Sicko DVD (2007) Widescreen
Film By Ken Burns - Lewis & Clark: The Journey Of The Corps Of Discovery video
$10.15 America's most incendiary filmmaker, Michael Moore, returned in 2007 with this health-care-industry exposé. SICKO tackles material as controversial as the topics explored in Moore's other films, yet does so in a way that places the focus on ordinary Americans affected by the nation's health-care crisis. After providing some historical background on how our nation's medical care system became so ravaged and unfair, Moore interviews a series of individuals and families who have had their lives all but destroyed by the denial of care in the service of profit. While there are two sides to the gun-control debate and even a legitimate discourse for how to best wage the war on terror, it's simply impossible to justify how a baby girl can wind up dead because her mother's health insurance wasn't accepted at a nearby hospital. Moore smartly allows this and other stories to be told with little or no interference, conjuring strong feelings of empathy, rage, and deep sadness.
Of course, SICKO isn't a PBS documentary, it's a Michael Moore movie, and his fingerprints are all over it. Moore visits countries that have universal health care--spectacularly so when he takes several World Trade Center workers ...

$71.65 After tackling the truly American subjects of jazz and baseball, award-winning documentarian Ken Burns returns to our country's military history with THE WAR. His acclaimed 1991 series, THE CIVIL WAR, was devoted to the War Between the States, while this 2007 production pays the same amount of care and attention to World War II. Rather than keeping THE WAR on the frontlines, Burns and his fellow director ...

Film By Ken Burns - Lewis & Clark: The Journey Of The Corps Of Discovery review
$10.49 King George III does some very odd things, but then who is to argue with the king? Well, his ambitious son, for one. He's not getting any younger, and all he does is sit around waiting for his father to die. So when the king starts behaving like a real madman, the Prince of Wales lobbies Parliament to assign him the power of prince regent. What ensues is a political struggle between the prime minister, a royalist, and the opposition party. In the meantime, the king is slowly being tortured by the strange practices of 18th-century medicine: He is bled regularly, and his feces are analyzed by all manner of doctors. To rectify this atrocity, the king's distressed entourage ...
