One was an often racially integrated swing band that came out with about 20 sides on Victor's Bluebird subsidiary during the mid-'30s. The original Little Ramblers, and the subject of a Timeless CD compilation released in 1997, were a hot jazz and dance band that recorded for Columbia during the mid-'20s, while making scads of records for numerous other labels under various names, the most famous being the California Ramblers. The folks at Timeless eliminated the Little Ramblers' first four recordings, beginning the chronology with the session of September 18, 1924. In 1996, Alejandro Escovedo continued the artistic expansion he'd started in earnest a few years earlier with his post-Rank N File solo albums, writing songs of heartbreak and exasperation via crunching, low-slung rockers and rootsy folk ballads. The 2003 Rykodisc re-release includes an extra disc of alternate takes and demo versions that provide new avenues into the complex songs. Following similar expensive presentations accorded to his two Watermelon albums, With These Hands, arguably Escovedo's best, most diverse, and provocative work (and his sole release on the Ryko label) receives the deluxe double-disc treatment. The sound is cleaned and tightened up a bit and the cover art reflects the original concept (which Ryko initially rejected), but the bonuses come on disc two. Kicking off with "Can't Take It," a hard-rocking studio track that was intended for the album but was cut, the rest of the extra CD is filled with live performances. It's here that the songs literally come alive in a variety of band settings. With seven tunes recorded in 1996 at South By Southwest (just before the release of the studio album), followed by five more cuts recorded the same year with his acoustic combo, this shows Escovedo's dive Recorded at The Hit Shack, Austin, Texas and Castle Oaks, Los Angeles, California.
