With 2004's MEDULLA, Bjork's already distinctive musical vision is catapulted into another stratosphere. Using the mouth as the primary instrument--vocal, percussive, and otherwise--MEDULLA evokes the ethereal sound of an angelic spirit and a group of Benedictine monks desperately hurtling through outer space. "Pleasure Is All Mine" immediately establishes MEDULLA's haunting, yet strangely comforting, tone. On top of a distorted background of carnal breathing, the vocals of Bjork, Inuit throat singer Tagaq, Mike Patton (Fantomas/Mr. Bungle), and the Icelandic Choir combine with the rhythms of human beat-box Rahzel, building to an eerily ferocious intensity.
The album, which also features art-rock pioneer Robert Wyatt, shifts back and forth between ambitious, operatically layered tracks ("Where Is the Line," "Desired Constellation") and more direct a cappella songs ("Show Me Forgiveness," "Oll Birtan"). Bjork reaches her peak when she combines both of these seemingly disparate forces, as in the electrifying "Who Is It (Carry My Joy on the Left, Carry My Pain on the Right)" and the album-closer, "Triumph of a Heart." MEDULLA proves that, once again, when it comes to sheer musical audacity, Bjork knows no boundaries.
Japanese pressing of the Icelandic icon's 2004 album includes one bonus track 'Komid'. 15 tracks in total. Polydor.
The Japanese version features additional material.Rolling Stone (p.79) - 3 1/2 stars out of 5 - "MEDULLA is both the most extreme record Bjork has ever released and the most immediately accessible....[With] and awe-inspiring architecture of sound..." Spin (p.111) - "On MEDULLA, her voice is in constant motion, in sync with the beat, rather than battling it..." - Grade: B+ Spin (p.65) - Ranked #19 in Spin's "40 Best Albums of the Year" - "She's a siren, luring us into the mystic with nothing but her voice." Entertainment Weekly (pp.161-2) - "[S]he'll soon have you shunning electronica....One of her best efforts..." - Grade: A Uncut (p.100) - 3 stars out of 5 - "It is the curious marriage of glottal outpouring and emotional candour to microscopically detailed and often utterly illogical arrangements that keeps her music vital and unpredictable." Uncut (p.76) - Ranked #41 in Uncut's "Best New Albums of 2004" - "[A]n awe-inspiring achievement..." The Wire (p.55) - "MEDULLA breezes with a sense of serendipitous discovery, with Bjork singing as sublime as ever." CMJ (p.39) - "The beats of 'Mouth's Cradle' spit and sputter, sometimes as a contrast and sometimes as a perfect fit to the female choir that haunts the corners of the song." Mojo (Publisher) (p.93) - 4 stars out of 5 - "MEDULLA is not only the bravest record she's ever made, it's also one of the strangest and most uncompromising by a major artist to get a commercial release....[With a] raw beauty, intricate choral arrangements and decidedly outr‚ production..." Medulla CD music
$21.29 This deluxe edition of Tusk includes a bonus disc featuring roughs, outtakes and demos.
No home should be without at least one copy of TUSK. Fleetwood Mac's magnum opus of 1979 is considered by some to be their greatest work. And while you are probably familiar with the hits, you may not realize that this recording is full of gems like Christine McVie's gorgeous "Brown Eyes" and Lindsey Buckingham's rousing and infectious "I Know I'm Not Wrong." Of course, even the Nikei industrial average would sound beautiful if it were sung with Christine's wonderful voice. And Lindsey Buckingham's home recordings that show up here are a virtual blueprint for the indie-rock home-recording scene that would flourish nearly 20 years later. While some records from this period seem campy and quaint in retrospect, TUSK still sounds terrific, thanks to those Dashut/Buckingham production values. But what's up with that marching band on the title track?
In the spring of 2004, Warner Strategic Marketing reissued as remastered expanded editions ...

The reviewers tell us what to buy, but the public actually part with the cash. Surely 26 million people cannot be wrong, as original Mac guitarist Peter Green's creation became the prime example of AOR long after his departure. The inner strife and turmoil of the band is credited as having helped to make this many-headed beast into such a success. Keyboardist Christine McVie sparred with husband/bassist John, and singer Stevie Nicks scrapped with boyfriend/guitarist Lindsay Buckingham. Drummer Mick Fleetwood held the emotional mess together with confident steadiness as demonstrated ...

$19.59 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Generally regarded as Elton John's masterpiece, GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD is a double-album (on one CD) that includes several of his signature songs alongside a sprawling array of lesser-known (but by no means lesser) tunes. The hits included "Bennie And The Jets," a funky, falsetto stomper; the Rolling Stonesy rocker ...
| | Elton John Madman Across The Water CD (1971) SACD Hybrid
Medulla album
$15.89 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
MADMAN ACROSS THE WATER produced only a couple of minor hits, which may have something to do with the fact that its best songs are all five or six minutes long. But they're among the strongest songs in the entire Elton John catalog--especially the lovely opening track, "Tiny Dancer," which builds from a light, delicately melodic verse to a sweeping, dramatic chorus. Another highlight is the inscrutably biographic "Levon," whose title character was born "on a Christmas day when the New York Times said God is dead."
John's luxurious piano melodies, Bernie Taupin's poetic lyrics, and Paul Buckmaster's lush string arrangements all stretch out on MADMAN, giving the record a grandiose, sweeping feel when it is not riding dark, ...

| | Dick Gaughan Outlaws & Dreamers CD (2001)
Medulla music CDs
$11.99 Former Boys of the Lough and Five Hand Reel guitarist and vocalist Dick Gaughan continues his exploration of Celtic-tinged originals and covers on the 2001 release Outlaws and Dreamers. Crisp and fiery guitar work contrasts his strong, clear voice on Phil Ochs' "When I'm Gone and Si Kahn's "What You Do With What You've Got," as well as on the traditional "Dowie Dens o Yarrow." Most of the tracks are simply Gaughan alone accompanied by his guitar, with a few fiddle and concertina highlights from former Battlefield Band member Brian McNeill. After nearly 30 years performing music, it would be easy for Gaughan to grow dull and complacent, but Outlaws and Dreamers proves that he still has the same spark that was evident on his earliest releases. ~ Zac Johnson
Scottish singer-songwriter-guitarist Dick Gaughan describes "Outlaws & Dreamers," his fifth and latest Appleseed CD, as "a bit of a departure from what I usually get up to in the studio. It's pretty much just me - voice and guitar - and Brian McNeill on fiddle and concertina on two tracks. I decided I should concentrate on getting the performances and spirit right and go for as 'live' a feel as possible." Gaughan's previous recordings in a 30-year career include those as a member of the Celtic bands The Boys of the Lough, Five Hand Reel and Clan Alba and over a dozen albums as a solo or occasional duo artist. His music has never been accused of slickness or commercialism, and the sparse approach of "Outlaws & Dreamers" provides a particularly bracing dose of undiluted Gaughan, one of the world's most stirring musicians. In the CD's liner notes, Gaughan defines "outlaws" as "those who refuse to conform to society's conventions and prejudices." By that definition, the material (and recording method) on "Outlaws & Dreamers" could be regarded as a tribute to those outlaws and their quest for personal and universal freedom through activism and self-determination. Whether the songs on the CD are original or interpreted, most carry freedom as their subtext. In the version here of Woody Guthrie's "Tom Joad" (based on John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath"), Gaughan pledges, "Wherever people aren't free/Wherever working people are fighting for their rights/That's where I'm gonna be." At the other extreme, Gaughan celebrates the peaceful beauty and unattended freedom of the titular "Wild Roses," a song by Texas performer Kimmie Rhodes. The interior strength of those with disabilities is paid tribute on the Si Kahn composition "What You Do With What You've Got," a perennial Gaughan show-opener. The freedom to experience life is found in Gaughan's cover of Phil Ochs' "When I'm Gone," the freedom to protest in Graham Moore's "Tom Paine's Bones," and the freedom of self-sacrifice in "Strong Women Rule Us All," a lesson in Scottish ...
