| | Yasmin Levy Mano Suave CD (2007)
Rossana Casale CD music
$13.89 Yasmin Levy has proved herself to be the leading exponent of Ladino song (Ladino is the language of the Sephardic Jews whose roots are in Spain). However, her previous albums have never quite captured her potential. This time, though, she's hit the spot, finding both the intensity of performance and delicacy of arrangement that's been her hallmark. The style is a mix of influences that blend perfectly -- listen carefully and you can hear traces of flamenco nestled alongside Middle Eastern music, with influences from around the Mediterranean liberally scattered across the sound. Her voice is in glorious form, with a depth of purity that illustrates just how she's matured and fully grown into her ability. Her own ...
| | Laura Pausini Io Canto CD (2006)
Rossana Casale music CDs
$7.55 Laura Pausini, a multilingual Italian pop singer who won a Latin Grammy in 2005 for Best Female Pop Vocal Album, decided to record an album of cover songs when she returned to the studio to record her follow-up effort. This is a fairly standard practice for pop/rock artists, of course, especially in the wake of a mammoth success like the one Pausini experienced with Resta in Ascolto (released concurrently in Spanish as Escucha in the Americas). Yo Canto (likewise released concurrently in Spanish) is a somewhat unusual covers album, however, for it's comprised of Italian pop/rock songs from the 1970s, '80s, and '90s -- few, if any, of which will be familiar to listeners across the Atlantic. Pausini performs the songs in a manner similar to that of Resta in Ascolto: the songs are heavily produced, layered with guitar, bass, and drums in addition to strings and synthesizers, and the performances are quite dramatic, often soaring to intense heights during the choruses, complemented by lyrics that are moody and poetic. | | West Indies: An Island Carnival CD (1983)
Rossana Casale music CDs
$9.79 The title is a bit misleading, since the pieces here aren't necessarily connected with carnival; instead, they're a celebration of the different cultures around the Caribbean. Unsurprisingly, there's a fair bit in Spanish, although "Aguinaldo," from the predominantly English-speaking island of Trinidad, might be a bit of a shock. However, the island's proximity to Venezuela has brought a strong Spanish element into the tongue. Inevitably, the rhythms are very African, as on the first two tracks here. Religion comes in with "Spiritual Baptists," a reminder that Christianity is a very important factor across the Caribbean. "The Story of Marrdevirain" highlights the tradition of immigrants from India who arrived during the 19th century, and "Reel" is a version of a Scottish tune dressed up in an African rhythm and loosened up, although many ears might have a problem discovering the original tune. The same is true for the song "Mr. Walker," here played on a pair of cocoa lutes. Regardless, it's a fabulous, varied listen, and also important in the way it highlights various aspects and traditions in island music. ~ Chris Nickson
A good overview of traditional music of the eastern Caribbean, this excellent CD was recorded between 1969 and 1971. It contains one or more selections from Dominica (merengue), St. Lucia (a song from ...

| | Hope Irish Best Of The Least CD (2007)
Rossana Casale album
$12.69 The independent corporation of Hope Irish the band has been a revolving door of various members, with Hope Irish herself standing steadfast behind the front desk checking I.D's and offering direction to the various floors of music collaboration.Hope Irish (yes thats her real name) hails from small-town Texas, which is why her music occasionally tastes a bit seedy and countrified, as well as punkishly rebellious. Hope Moved to Austin to continue her education, which in turn took her across the pond to London, UK. Hope had also been very busy all of this time working and performing with another mind-shattering, butt-shaking band from Austin called BROTHER MACHINE.While living in London, she dropped all but a few art-related classes and gained an education of her own by visiting music venues every night, (which often left her waiting for the damned night bus and lead to getting lost in not the best of neighbourhoods) as well as slinging pints at the castle pub. Eventually, she had to come back to Austin to graduate, but not without an armload of new material and a brainful of new influences.Hope Irish recorded her first EP in 2005, HopeIsh, with Rambunctious Entertainment of Denton, Tx, and backing band,THE INFLUENCE. The EP features seven gritty tracks of angst, love, and cynicism.Since then, Hope Irish has been working with SuperPop Records of Austin Texas to complete ...
