There comes a time in young music fans' lives when they put aside the flashy, lightweight records of their teens, come face to face with humanity's harsh realities, and pick new tunes appropriate to a more serious and realistic worldview. Anyone who feels that it's time to relegate such albums to the box under the bed would do well to start a new life-phase with a little Hatebreed.
On THE RISE OF BRUTALITY, the band lives up to the record's title, delivering a disc of astonishing purity and extreme volume. There is no rapping. There are no turntables and no power ballads. In fact, there is nothing here but a mind-numbing, ferocious, and totally unrelenting onslaught of drums, guitar, bass, and hoarse-voiced shouting. Unlike similar-sounding bands, though, Hatebreed never sounds less than totally impassioned, making for a uniformly thrilling listening experience. Taking its cues from socially aware 1980s hardcore like Sick of It All and Agnostic Front, the band combines positive messages with enough hyper-speed double-bass drumming and stop-on-a-dime rhythmic shifts to keep even the most sugar and testosterone-addled youth moshing until they reach retirement age.
UK edition of the punk-metal act's 2003 album features 13 tracks including 1 bonus track 'Bound To Violence'. Roadrunner.
CD contains 1 bonus track.
Recorded at Planet Z Studios, Hadley, Massachusetts.
Hatebreed: Jamey Jasta (vocals); Sean Martin (guitar); Chris Beattie (bass); Matt Byrne (drums).
CMJ (10/27/03, p.56) - "...Make no mistake: No Band in 2003 comes close to the full-on brutality that this Connecticut quartet spews with unquenchable vengeance. If there's one underground band that matters the most, it's Hatebreed..." Rise Of Brutality Review

| | Steel Panther Feel The Steel CD (2009)
Rise Of Brutality
$10.39 Like Spinal Tap and several other acts before it, Steel Panther found success mocking the excesses of `80s hair metal while accurately re-creating the genre's musical style. The Los Angeles-based, wig n' spandex-clad quartet delivered a particularly low-brow take on the mock-metal genre with its debut album FEEL THE STEEL. With groan-inducing, intentionally politically incorrect song titles such as "Asian Hooker," "Fat Girl," and "Eatin' Ain't Cheatin'," the disc may not be the most clever entry into the comedy rock sweepstakes but it is one of the most authentic-sounding, perfectly re-creating the whammy bar squeals, David Lee Roth-esque yelps, and pounding double bass drum licks of its source material.
In case you're wondering, despite what VH1's Behind the Music might have you believe, hair metal is still alive and kicking. Unfortunately, it's more lowbrow than ever, thanks to L.A.'s Steel Panther. Taking debauchery to the next level for their debut, Feel the Steel, Steel Panther gather inspiration from Warrant, Poison, and Mötley Crüe as they pretend to be a metal group with two primal desires: rocking faces and scoring chicks. Metal satire is a well-traveled ...

Rise Of Brutality
$13.14 Dutch pomp-metal band Epica, fronted by classically trained mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, released their second album for Nuclear Blast only a year after their label debut, the more unique The Classical Conspiracy. That two-disc live set found them performing a mix of classical works and their own songs with backing by a full orchestra and choir. This album offers more of their bombastic goth metal songs, with Simons' vocals floating atop an ever flowing stream of complicated drumming, epic riffs, and shredtastic solos. The use of orchestral instruments to add John Williams-like climaxes is intermittently successful, but the music is just as frequently stripped down to an unaccompanied piano or to just the rock band, and that works, too. The very occasional interruption of male death growls is less necessary; frankly, ...

Rise Of Brutality
$6.65 Digitally remastered by Stephen Marcussen (Marcussen Mastering, Los Angeles, California).
This is a multi-channel Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
MIA for the latter half of the '90s and into the new millennium, Alice In Chains added GREATEST HITS to the list of seemingly posthumous releases in a canon whose last studio album was a 1995 self-titled release. This bare-bones 10-song sampler does serve as a quick overview for neophytes interested in one of the seminal bands to emerge from a generation of grunge bands including Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. Between Jerry Cantrell's thick, sludgy riffs and Layne Staley's primal howl, AIC had the market cornered on nihilism.
Four cuts on this compilation come from the band's 1991 masterpiece DIRT and serve as a centerpiece, the most compelling being the harrowing "Rooster" (a tribute to Cantrell's ...

Rise Of Brutality
$13.69 As time goes on, heavy metal continues to get more and more extreme. No, not the "stuff" you hear on the radio or see on MTV that tries to pass itself as metal, but the music that is bubbling under in the metal underground. Nile is one such band that continues to push metal's boundaries to the limits, as it does on its 2005 release Annihilation of the Wicked (produced by Neil Kernon of Queensr˙che fame). Obviously judging from its name and song titles, the group has a thing for Middle Eastern imagery, and the album starts off with sounds ...
