Timewellspent is a studio album, and embodies every painstaking tape inch and frantic effect search that description suggests; it's the work of two dudes, but often has the saucer big eyes of Pink Floyd or the Polyphonic Spree. "Anyone to Be"'s halting vocals fade in on a Cobra hand-held phone as programmed drums shuffle in the back and a piano plinks halfheartedly. It sounds something like Air might with a stronger indie pop influence. As such, it's gorgeous and addicting. "Probably" and "Hello" take a different tack. They're still polite to a point. But each features layered arrangements -- xylophones, vintage organ, muted trumpets, sweet guitar strums -- for a more deliberate pop sound. Think Aluminum Group. It's a matter of taste which Timewellspent you like better, the hazy or the haughtily sweet. But there's no questioning Casey Fundaro and Christopher Moll's abilities as pop craftsmen. Other highlights of the album include the brief, achy "Millionaire" ("I wanna be a movie star...or at least drive a fancy car") and the echoing big-sky twang of "Minor Poet." Best might be the late-album entry "Deora." Shimmery and succinct, it ties both sides of Timewellspent to the back of a slow-moving Tokyo taxi; with neon reflecting in tears, it matches the melancholy detachment of Lost in Translation. ~ Johnny Loftus

Timewellspent
$33.75 The Small Faces present their four disc U.K. import reissue release OGDEN'S NUT GONE FLAKE.
Having begun their career as the archetypal Mod band, the Small Faces latterly embraced traces of flower-power's whimsy. Astute enough not to sacrifice their identity, the quartet retained a distinctive perspective, as evinced by a string of superb pop singles, including "Here Comes The Nice" and "Itchycoo Park." A sense of pop melody and ...

$7.59 Digitally remastered by Joe Lopes (September 1988, RCA Studios, New York).
From 1972's Transformer onward, Lou Reed spent most of the '70s playing the druggy decadence card for all it was worth, with increasingly mixed results. But on 1976's Coney Island Baby, ...

$14.19 Recorded live at The Boarding House, San Francisco, California in October 1973. Includes liner notes by Richard Loren, Neil V. Rosenberg and Owsley Stanley.
Twenty-one years after the first album Old & In the Way came the second, an amazing development for a group that existed for only nine months and about 30 gigs in 1973. That High Lonesome Sound, like its predecessor, Old & In the Way, was drawn from the group's ...

| | Gipsy Kings Pasajero CD (2006) Import
Timewellspent
$19.79 The return to the slicker stylings and the integration of more forms are utterly comprehensible when one considers how much Latin popular music has changed in the past couple of years. The Kings are used to being on top of the charts, and they aren't about to throw in the towel to go back to folk music. That said, there are rootsy tunes here, though they are in the minority. That doesn't mean this record is a loss: far from it. On "Café," the band (with Eidel on accordion) goes backward, strutting through a joyous singalong son. "Canastero" is a mid-tempo ballad full of passion, pathos, and the kind of longing that's hard to find anywhere but in the Kings' best songs. One of the more experimental tunes, "Sol y Luna," features the upright bass playing of Bernard Paganotti (he's amazing throughout the album), and also a shimmering kit drum played by Patrice Renson, with Ava Saty's duduk playing a stunning little melody throughout this heady romantic tune. It may, in fact, be the finest moment on the record -- and an all too brief one. The percussion and upright bass playing on "Guaranga" are fine ballast for the fiery flamenco guitaristry on the instrumental. In sum, Pasajero is a mixed bag, in terms of an eclectic mix of tunes. The big-band numbers don't work quite so well, but they aren't in the majority here either. [Pasajero was re-released in 2007 on Nonesuch as an enhanced CD with bonus video footage] ~ Thom Jurek
2006 release from this modern Flamenco outfit from Spain, still going strong after 20 years of critically successful releases. Similar in style to their Roots album from 2004, Pasajero finds the band moving away from the keyboards that dominated their late '90s output, preferring to concentrate on the joyful sounds of the flamenco guitar, percussion, accordion and some brass. In essence, it's a return to form for the band. Throw in a little reggae and add some global grooves to the mix and you've got yet another outstanding Gipsy Kings album! 14 tracks including 'Si Tu Me Quieres', 'Pueblos' and 'Chan Chan'. Sony/BMG.
It's been two years since the Gipsy Kings' masterpiece Roots, an album where they kissed big, extravagant production, as well as big drums and keyboards, goodbye. Apparently old habits are hard to break. On the cover of 2007's Pasajero, the Kings look back ...
