Love, Peace & Poetry: African Psychedelic Music
$11.69 Includes all of the Palace Guard's 45's and two bonus tracks by The Emeralds, Emitt Rhodes's first band.
Recorded between 1964 & 1967. Includes liner notes by Terry Rae.
While the Palace Guard never found any real fame beyond their hit "Falling Sugar and a residency at the 1960s Los Angeles hot spot Hullabaloo, this collection does include the rest of their high points, if only for posterity. The Palace Guard dressed in matching uniforms of indiscriminate military origin, and were known to don furry headgear similar to the British Beefeaters. While these gags were obviously not keys to success, they make for some wonderfully kitschy photos. One of these graces the cover of retro indie Gear-Fab's straight reissue of the Palace Guard's ...

Love, Peace & Poetry: African Psychedelic Music
$14.49 The sixth volume in QDK Media's series of psychedelic rock compilation CDs points the spotlight on the rich -- although very underground -- Brazilian music scene. As Stan Denski explains in the liner notes, the mid- to late '60s were the days of General Humberto Castelo's dictatorship, which made any musical activity a political act. Those were also the days of the Tropicalia movement, and if the artists on this collection never had the exposure or appeal of people like Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, they don't escape their influence. Then again, "psychedelic" means a lot of British and American pop entered the ears of these young Brazilian musicians. The results range from entertaining exotic clones of the Jefferson ...

Love, Peace & Poetry: African Psychedelic Music
$13.39 Recording information: 05/12/2007.
ABOUT THE "LIVE" CD: "Not many of us left of the old school, but they don't come any better than Big George Brock." After this brief testimonial by 80-year-old Sonny Payne of Helena, Arkansas' famed King Biscuit Time radio show, Big George Brock tells the packed house that he's "here to please you, not to tease you." Then, he goes on to prove it throughout this brand-new, hour-long live album — the much heralded follow-up to Brock's Blues Music Award-nominated "Round Two." After 67 years of singing blues and playing harmonica, 75-year-old Brock IS the blues. Best known for his high-energy, "step-back-in-time" live shows, it's fitting that Brock recorded this incredible concert performance on the eve of his 75th birthday at world-famous Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale, ...

| | North Mississippi Allstars Electric Blue Watermelon CD (2005)
Love, Peace & Poetry: African Psychedelic Music
$8.89 ELECTRIC BLUE WATERMELON furthers the notion that the North Mississippi Allstars have become something of a rolling history of 20th-century musical forms. Deeply rooted in Delta blues of the heavily rhythmic, modal variety pioneered by Charlie Patton (the band covers Patton's "Mississippi Bollweevil" here) and practiced by latter-century artists like R.L. Burnside, the Allstars spread their wings to encompass old-school rock & roll, country, electrified blues rock, '60s psychedelia, hip-hop, and a dash of alt-rock sensibility.
Typically uneasy musical partners ...
