The Residents are not only the longest-lived of the many absurdist rock bands that emerged from the wreckage of the 1960s, they are also the most consistently interesting. Who else would have recorded an entire album of parodies based on Meet the Beatles, or a multi-part opera about moles, or a musical ethnography of Eskimos (complete with a disco remix EP)? Icky Flix itself is a DVD-only multimedia project, originally released in early 2001, that collects and expands on musical and video material taken from various periods in the band's career; all of the songs were rearranged and re-recorded for Icky Flix. This CD is an audio distillation that includes such blasts from the past as "The Third Reich 'n' Roll" and "Songs for Swinging Larvae" (originally recorded by labelmates Renaldo and the Loaf), as well as the notorious entirety of a 20-minute song cycle entitled "Whatever Happened to Vileness Fats?" The music is, of course, utterly bizarre, though sometimes -- as on the strangely cathartic "Just for You (Disfigured Night Part 7)" -- surprisingly accessible. For better or worse, there's no one else remotely like them. ~ Rick Anderson
Icky Flix was originally released as a DVD in 2001. It featured classic and new video-works of The Residents. Since the many of the original music-recordings were in stereo, The Residents re-recorded their own work and mixed them in 5.1 surround sound. Many people didn't have 5.1 sets then, so the group was requested to re-mix the 5.1 versions to 2-channel stereo and make it available on standard audio CD. The result was this Icky Flix CD release. This is the companion piece to The Residents' ICKY FLIX DVD.

Icky Flix album
$19.10 NEVER A DULL MOMENT picks up where EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY left off. Here we have more raucous rock & roll with healthy dollops of soul and twang thrown in for good measure. Always looking for a good songwriter to cover, Stewart's honorees here include Jimi Hendrix ("Angel"), Dylan ("Mama You Been On My Mind"), and Rod's personal hero, Sam Cooke ("Twistin' The Night Away"). Sidling up nicely next to these heartfelt interpretations are some of Stewart's finest original songs. Teaming with spiritual brother Ron Wood, Stewart offers up the cheeky "Italian Girls" and "True Blue," a track that goes along ...

| | Tom Waits Glitter And Doom Live CDs (2009) Digipak
Icky Flix music CDs
$13.84 Glitter and Doom Live, a double-disc set, marks Tom Waits' third live effort in his nearly 40-year career, each one summing up his career to the point of its release. The first, Nighthawks at the Diner issued in 1975 on Asylum, is regarded by many as one of the greatest live albums of all time. The second was Big Time, released during his tenure at Island in 1986. The musical performances on disc one of Glitter and Doom Live were culled from Waits' historic sold-out tour of the U.S. and Europe. He compiled and sequenced the set himself, intending to make them sound like a single show. The material leans, understandably, on his recordings with the Anti label. There are stellar performances here, such as "Get ...

| | Daughtry Leave This Town CD (2009)
Icky Flix album
$12.99 When he was recording his debut album in 2006, Chris Daughtry didn't have the time to assemble the real rock band he so desperately wanted to have, so it appeared under the band name Daughtry without featuring any of the musicians who later became part of the group. That's not the case with LEAVE THIS TOWN, Daughtry's second record: all five members are glowering on the album cover, floating like specters over an abandoned Californian street. The five rockers serve as visual evidence that Daughtry is a band, not a person, and such reminders may be necessary because LEAVE THIS TOWN doesn't differ much in feel or form from DAUGHTRY. Overall, LEAVE THIS TOWN isn't quite as studio slick as DAUGHTRY, which was fueled by Chris Daughtry's desire prove that he belonged in the big leagues; here, ...

| | Duane Allman Anthology CDs (1972)
Icky Flix music CDs
$15.09 Duane Allman's greatness was apparent on his recordings with the Allman Brothers, yet there was another side to the superb guitarist. For many years, he was a highly respected session musician, playing on cuts by Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, King Curtis, Boz Scaggs, Delaney & Bonnie, and Clarence Carter, among others. By including those session cuts, as well as a sampling of his brief sojourn in Eric Clapton's Derek and the Dominoes and a few rare solo tracks, along with a number of representative Allman Brothers songs, the double-album Anthology winds up drawing a complete portrait of Allman. He may have recorded plenty of other material worth hearing, but this has the bare essentials for an excellent introduction and retrospective.~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Best Of The New Dimensions CD (1996)
Icky Flix songs
$12.95 This best-of includes 22 tracks (four of them previously unissued) recorded in 1963 and 1964 by the New Dimensions. It's fair to say that it might have never been compiled had collector interest in the band not been spiked by the presence of a very young Michael Lloyd (who looks about 12 on the cover photo) and future Three Dog Night keyboardist Jimmy Greenspoon (who doesn't look much older). It almost sounds more like a compilation album than a single-artist collection, so inadvertently accurately does it capture several sub-styles of early-'60s Californian instrumental surf music at its peak. There are moody, electric keyboard-decorated rumbles in the spirit of the Chantays' classic hit "Pipeline"; roaring Dick Dale-like workouts, including a version of one of Dale's signature tunes, "Miserlou"; and more elementary R&B-influenced grinders with saxophone. It's all very competently played, especially considering their youth. What it lacks, however, is a song, or songs, with that classic quality of something like "Pipeline" or "Miserlou," though the haunting aura ...
