| | Neil Young On The Beach CD (1974) Remastered
In The Hills Of California CD music
$8.99 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social and personal. It is good to hear Young back with such bite and vitriol, especially after the broken desperation of TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT. But while ON THE BEACH is edgy and deeply felt, it also manages to sound liberating and relaxed, with glimmers of hope and humor peeking through the spare, evocative arrangements. Inexplicably unreleased on CD until 2003, ON THE BEACH is both unflinching and resilient, and easily stands as one of Young's finest albums.
Personnel: Neil Young (vocals, guitar, banjo, harmonica, Wurlitzer organ); Neil Young (Wurlitzer piano); Ben Keith (vocals, ...
| | Buddy Miller Universal United House Of Prayer CD (2004) Digipak
In The Hills Of California music CDs
$11.75 Alt-country polymath Buddy Miller's UNIVERSAL UNITED HOUSE OF PRAYER was touted as his "gospel album," but that's only true in the loosest sense. While the content of all the songs is spiritual in nature (some less overtly than others), fans of what normally falls under the gospel umbrella might be in unfamiliar territory. The material comes from a wide variety of sources, from Bob Dylan (his early ballad "With God on Our Side") to the Louvin Brothers ("There's a Higher Power") and late singer/songwriter Mark Heard (opening track "Worry Too Much"). All the songs are delivered in Miller's trademark strong, soulful style, with his characteristic mix of country, rock, folk, and swampy blues. Released in 2004, ...
| | John Prine Fair & Square CD (2005) Bonus Tracks
In The Hills Of California songs
$13.35 FAIR & SQUARE's release was highly anticipated by John Prine fans, as the veteran singer/songwriter hadn't recorded an album of new songs in 10 years (the preceding IN SPITE OF OURSELVES was mostly cover tunes). Happily for both Prine and his contingent, FAIR & SQUARE represents that most coveted of phenomena, the Return to Form. Though 1995's LOST DOGS & MIXED BLESSINGS was not without its virtues, some tracks were marred by overproduction. Here, though, the arrangements are scaled back down to Prine's comfort zone, appropriately rootsy to accommodate both the down-home amiability of his tone and the endlessly intriguing twists and turns of his unique lyrical style. While he's not untouched by contemporary events (references to the White House and the war in Iraq crop up), most of the tunes here are the sort ...

| | Grand Funk Railroad Greatest Hits CD (2006) With DVD; Remastered
In The Hills Of California album
$20.55 This 14-track Grand Funk Railroad hits collection, released in 2006, does solid justice to the Michigan boogie-rock legends. While certainly not the most cerebral band in the annals of rock, Grand Funk possessed a sweaty, caveman grandeur that remains difficult to fully dismiss. We're talking about a band that rocked so hard they needed to wear headbands--surely they deserve at ...
