Paul Rishell and Annie Raines seems to have a bad case of the blues on Goin' Home, which is good news for the listener. While the album kicks off with two originals, most of the material is drawn from classic blues players like Charley Patton, Ma Rainey, and Blind Lemon Jefferson. Rishell handles most of the vocals and guitar work, and the arrangements vary from stripped-down acoustic to full-band electric. Raines, on the other hand, specializes in the blues harp and helps out -- from time to time -- on background vocals. As a team, Rishell and Raines are what one might expect if Roy Book Binder and Rory Block teamed up. The most exciting work on Goin' Home is acoustic. There are fine versions of Jefferson's "Black Horse Blues" and Rainey's "Black Eye Blues." The latter song is the rare piece sung by Raines, and it's shameful she's not given more leads on the album. There's also a fun version of the randy Fulton Allen song, "Custard Pie," though the performance here reveals the album's Achilles' heel. Rishell's a good singer, but his vocals lack the raw authenticity of a singer like Sonny Terry. While Goin' Home may be too eclectic for its own good, it's likely that many blues fans will find Rishell and Raines' varied approach refreshing. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

Johnny Otis 1945-1947 CD  (2002)

Goin' Home
CD $18.05  Top 500
Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. With one apparently unobtainable exception, the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series has assembled all of Otis' Excelsior recordings, made in Los Angeles between 1945 and 1947. This provides background and context for his more well-known Savoy material, and indeed for everything this amazing person accomplished during the second half of the 20th century. Otis' first act as a recording bandleader was to borrow Jimmy Rushing from Count Basie! Rushing sounds right at home with this group, which included tenor saxophonist Paul Quinichette, pianist Bill Doggett, and bassist Curtis Counce. During "Preston's Love Mansion," as Doggett quotes the famous riff from Dizzy Gillespie's "Salt Peanuts," the band hollers "Johnny Otis!" instead. And well they might, for during this exciting number ...

Rod Piazza Keepin' It Real CD  (2004)

Goin' Home
CD $13.45  3.5 stars
Keepin' It Real is an aptly titled disc by Rod Piazza & the Mighty Flyers. Among the 13 tracks are edgy performances of such blues standards as "Good Morning Little School Girl," "Baby Please Don't Go," and "Pretty Thing," but it's the six originals that really ignite this set. Since the band had been working out these songs during live shows, the tracks were usually captured in one take when they finally played them in the studio. The potent combination of Piazza's rough modernized blues harp, the boogie-woogie keyboard runs by Honey Piazza, and the blistering guitar attack of new Mighty Flyer Henry Carvajal effortlessly clicks, as proved on the shuffle "Moving in a West Coast Way" ...

Step It Up
C J Chenier Step It Up CD  (2001)

Goin' Home
CD $14.25  Audio Samples
This is the son of the man who popularized zydeco, taking the music of his father and imbuing it with more of the funk and music he grew up with, pushing and exploring one of the two main roots that his father fused to become zydeco. One root is the music of the Cajuns and Creoles of Southwestern Louisiana, and the other is the root that C.J. Chenier is exploring here, the rhythm & blues/funk root. This makes sense coming from Chenier because that is the music he grew up with and was the first music he played. Make no mistake, this is still zydeco, but it owes much more to the roots music from the gulf coast of Texas and the Port Arthur region, as opposed to the Louisiana side. The music that was dominant in this area of the country was/is the blues and the driving horn sections of the rhythm & blues bands. He used to play saxophone with various bands and then joined his father's band playing sax. You can see this love of the horns is still with him as he arranged all the horns and directed the rhythm section. He is now playing his father's full-sized piano accordion, and bringing that funky bluesy energy to the music. Most importantly he has got one of those smoky voices that lends itself to the music. Plus he has a feel that many only wish for whatever the tempo of the song. It may be an upbeat dance number, or listen to the wonderful job he does on the slow "The Right to Walk Away." He displays a feel for this song that makes it a standout on this disc. Many times the slower numbers are just throwaway songs; this one is full of the passion that sells a song. Now he is writing more of his material and the songs are getting stronger. The influence of his father is strong, yet ...
