The Kinks were still riding high on a resurgence of popularity that started in the late seventies when this 1983 release hit the streets (and was followed by GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT, making for two albums in a row with covers featuring the album title spray painted on a wall). The album opens with several big-fisted guitar chord numbers, which translated perfectly to the arenas they were then playing regularly. It's also important to note that these riff-driven songs are from the band who practically wrote the book on riff-heavy songs when "You Really Got Me" came blasting out of radios seventeen years before.
The album includes a couple of hit singles--"Come Dancing" and "Don't Forget To Dance"--both of which employ moderate volume and propulsion (in contrast with some of their other singles from the era). The album's title is apt, as these are some of Ray Davies bleakest looks at the world around him-and the songs are consequently full of lost love, disappearing circumstances, and dreams put on hold. "Property," for example, details the dissolution of a marriage in stark, sad simplicity.
The Kinks: Ray Davies (vocals, guitar, piano, synthesizer); Dave Davies (vocals, guitar); Ian Gibbons (keyboards); Jim Rodford (bass guitar); Mick Avory (drums).

State Of Confusion Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Last great Kinks album sounds about right While I prefer other stages of the Kinks' career (particularly the '66 to '70 era), I wouldn't disagree with the reviewer who said this was the last great Kinks album.
It's certainly the last of the Kinks' late-'70s/early-'80s run of great "arena-rock" albums, which started with Low Budget or, maybe, Misfits.
The writeup at the top of this entry is wrong on one point. "Give the People Want They Want" came out before this album, not after.

great.... Im starting my kinks cd collection (I just have 3-4 records) and this is one of the best, as the reviewer noticed, there are some guitar oriented tunes to begin the album, but then you come across a row of really great tracks: come dancing, property, dont forget to dance, young conservatives, heart of gold....and the bonus tracks are a good addition.
There is no filler in here, really. Diifficult times for the band and ray davies (check out the briliant simplicity of tracks like "property"), he was going through a difficult time on his marriage, and the rest of the band was in the middle of personal differences, which lead to the departure of founding member Mick avory months later. Listen, this album had to be recorded in two parts: first ray, mick and the bass, and later in other session dave and the keyboard player, cos dave and mick couldn't see each other in the same room.
In spite of that, this is a great record and a good reminder of how good and influential this band was.

$35.85 After repeatedly raising the bar for metal bands everywhere, Meshuggah goes slightly experimental on CATCH THIRTY-THREE, the respected Swedish outfit's 2005 release. Meshuggah keeps intact its propensity for the pummeling riffs, demonic vocals, and complex polyrhythms that have compelled massive crowds to headbang in 7/4 time. But the band displays a new direction here, utilizing relentless repetition and atmospheric guitars to create a hypnotic opus that borders on industrial music.
CATCH THIRTY-THREE unfolds more like a symphony in 13 parts than a metal album, as movements bleed into each other forming a perfect arc of structured chaos, strewn with darker, ...
| | Terminal How The Lonely Keep... CD (2005)
State Of Confusion album
$12.49 How the Lonely Keep is the Tooth & Nail debut of Terminal, who used to be known as Letter Twelve back in Mansfield, TX. They're a young quintet with a heavy influence from Further Seems Forever, where pleading verses habitually explode into head-nodding chorus proclamations flanked by triumphantly crashing guitars. It's an approach tapped by countless bands attached to the Purevolume and MySpace nations (Tooth & Nail's own Slow Coming Day being just one), and while the sound might be getting a little tired by 2005, the groups keep showing up on your local all-ages show docket. To their benefit ...
