(12 Customer Reviews)
Sobule's fine lyrics spin narratives about characters in trying situations. A boy named Johnny, in "Under the Disco Ball," tries to hide his homosexuality from his conservative parents, while "Tel Aviv" is a first person account of an Israeli prostitute. The details in Sobule's story-songs make them credible, and their emotional resonance gives them punch. That Sobule is able to marry these talents to a keen pop sensibility and an often disarming romanticism ("Jetpack" reveals the narrator's wish to fly into a lover's apartment) make UNDERDOG VICTORIOUS well worth a listen.
Witty, satirical, and charming, Jill Sobule brings a refreshing twist to the confessional singer/songwriter style, a fact readily apparent on 2004's UNDERDOG VICTORIOUS. In part, Sobule builds her appeal with a knack for breezy, infectious hooks, like the one on the album's first single, "Cinnamon Park," or the anthemic, sing-along chorus of the title track. Also impressive is Sobule's ear for tasteful, appealing arrangements that nod to pop history ("Cinnamon Park" is centered on the main piano riff from Chicago's "Saturday in the Park"), but always suit the song by highlighting her melodies and intimate, emotive singing.

Jill Sobule, Victorious! This album is another gem by Jill. The only thing better than a new album by Jill is to see her live! Submitted by pepperguy8 (Langhorne, Pa.,USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Always creative As always Jill is a creative genius.
The only thing I noticed was that a couple of songs were pretty old ones.
But the music is great and I wish she would write some more. Submitted by rkaplan4 (Bayside, NY USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Jill does it again! "Underdog Victorious" is another "simply glorious" collection of thoughts, observations, stories and social commentary from Jill Sobule. As always, the lyrics are witty, smart, imaginative, direct, introspective and fun. And the music is great, everything from the quietness of "Tender Love" to the hipness of "Joey" to the rousing "Underdog Victorious" to the fast-paced, seemingly Elvis inspired final (untitled) track. Where else but on a Jill Sobule album will you find fantasies about having a "Jetpack"? Or about being "Under the Disco Ball" and "under the spell of leather and a big kick drum"? Or a swingin' ode to Joey Heatherton? Or a story about a prostitute in "Tel Aviv"? Or musings about "Strawberry Gloss" and other memories of teen life? Whether you are new to Jill Sobule and her music or a longtime fan, "Underdog Victorious" is a must for your music collection! Submitted by janno831 (Hopkins, MN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Jill Sobule raises the bar for her own best. Again. From start to(bonus track)finish every song is a gem. Jill fans, even though loving every second of it, won't be suprised, but new fans, and "Underdog Victorious" should gain Jill a few universes more of them, are in for a quirky side swipe from a muse of creativity with every note and lyric."Freshman"kicks things off dripping with a loneliness that if you weren't smiling from the nuts and bolts delivery you could cry. "JetPack"a live Jill Sobule song for a while now finally makes it's "on the record" debut. Worth the wait. I'm strapping mine on in a moment. The production is wonderful on this album. Brad Jones is a perfect co-conspirator in quirkiness as are all the players and producers. Jill plays several instruments herself adding to the personal feel of this one. Her songs are vignettes, character studies, send ups, send offs, you name it. All delivered with a perspective born of experience, compassion, anger and more than a bit of magic that comes from a near collision with from the muse who bears a striking resemblance to Jill Sobule herself. The musical styles are as varied as the subjects of the songs.Gentle acoustic folk with Jill on guitar unless she turns Townsend and the same strings become strings of rage. No slouch on electric either when the tune needs to rock...it rocks. "Cinnamon Park"the current single and by rights a hit, would make the Chicago horn section proud as the "Saturday in the Park"like horns are done on ocarina and spacey vocals. And it works! No musical genre is off limits and in some cases this can make an album seem uneven and a little difficult to go the distance. Not this one. The song pacing is right on the nose. After one listen all of the variety blends into a single whole and the problem becomes not hitting the repeat button agin. Jill Sobule's voice is tender and personal. She's always singing to you not at you as she paints a song like "The Last Line" or "Tel-Aviv". Still, hidden not too far below, the cynicism, anger, and hurt of the human experience comes through in her voice her voice like a slyly hidden dagger that you think you might have noticed in someone's eyes. My personal favourite among all of them is "Tender Love". An actual(gulp.I think.),love song. While listening I feel loved despite all of the un-lovable hidden failings I feel I have. That is one of Jill Sobules greatest abilities. You want to be a part of the world she let's you in on in her music. It's not a sycophantic thing by any means. It's a welcoming to all of us because we're in the same boat. Different decks or cabins maybe but the trip is being shared. If you think, listen, feel, laugh, cry or feel as cold as steele this album is compassionately there for you.
Underdogs fire up your jetpacks. There is a place where everyone can be victorious. Thanks to Jill Sobule.

Underdog Victorious music CDs
$15.19 The 1992 edition of Elements is much more interesting than the original version. Co-leaders and founders bassist Mark Egan and drummer Danny Gottlieb were clearly challenged by the playing of keyboardist Gil Goldstein and David Mann on soprano. The drum machines were gone and this live set finds the group really stretching out on five Egan originals. There are periods of meandering but most of the music is purposeful, it consistently grooves, and Mann's soprano adds a lot of fire to the performances, even to the ballad "Amazon Beauty." This is an excellent effort by a colorful fusion/post-bop band. ~ Scott Yanow
