DJ Dan's steady mix CD output continued in 2004 with Accelerate, this one released by Kinkybeat rather than Moonshine or Kinetic. The up-and-coming label known for its elaborate packaging appends a second disc of remixes and rarities -- mostly comprised of remixes of DJ Dan's one big production over the years, "That Zipper Track." This second disc isn't all that interesting, though. The mix disc is much more worthwhile, another hour-plus of the carefree, feel-good house music synonymous with DJ Dan's mixes over the years. While Accelerate doesn't stand out among DJ Dan's numerous mixes, the snazzy packaging and bonus disc aside, it's not necessarily a disappointment either, unless you consider more of the same a disappointment. ~ Jason Birchmeier

Primus: Les Claypool (vocals, acoustic bass guitar, bass guitar); Larry LaLonde (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Tim "Herb" Alexander (drums). Primus' first studio album wouldn't necessarily be a surprise to anyone familiar with their Suck on This days, not least because a good chunk of that album ended up being represented here. Not that this was surprising, but what was pleasant was how well and easily the at-once frenetic and extremely precise way the trio had around its spastic rhythms, translated into a great effort away from the stage. Certainly the fact that Les Claypool had once tried out for Metallica was clear enough with the doomy metal opening of "To Defy the Laws of Tradition," but once Claypool started singing about brides choosing colors other than white for marriages, ...

$8.05 Personnel: Nina Gordon (vocals, guitar); Wendy Melvoin (guitar, bass guitar); Peter Bradley Adams, Peter Adams (piano); Paul Bushnell (bass guitar); Sean Nelson , Sean Nelson (drums); Jamie Edwards (guitar, piano); Bob Rock, Jeff Russo, Joel Shearer, Tom Morello (guitar); Abe Laboriel, Jr., Joey Waronker, Josh Freese (drums). Audio Mixer: Jens. Recording information: Haiku Hi; Our Studio, Los Angeles, CA; Plantation Mixing and Recording; Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA. Illustrator: Rachel Salmon. Photographer: Melanie Nissen. Six years after her solo debut, TONIGHT & THE REST OF MY LIFE, ex-Veruca Salt singer Nina Gordon offers up an assured and emotionally engaging follow-up, BLEEDING HEART GRAFFITI. Like the former outing, this 2006 record is produced by Bob Rock (Metallica), who brings a surprisingly light touch to the guitar-driven tunes, opting for vibrant pop over an edgier sound. Although much of the album is musically upbeat, the themes, which focus on the highs and lows of love, can be deceptively dark, as on the chiming and utterly catchy "Kiss Me 'Till It Bleeds" ("I'm gonna hang myself on someone else's just-enough rope"). While Gordon/Veruca Salt fans may have been frustrated by the long gap before this disc, the strong songs on BLEEDING HEART GRAFFITI should satisfy. Give Nina Gordon credit for this: as her former bandmate Louise Post entrenches Veruca Salt in the sound and styles of the mid-'90s on their 2006 effort IV, Gordon enthusiastically embraces maturity with her second solo album, Bleeding Heart Graffiti, an eminently tasteful collection of adult pop that's not just an album, but a song cycle tracing the breakup of a relationship. Gordon may be following the pattern that Liz Phair wrote when she made the leap from indie rock to Gap ads, but Gordon is so tasteful she bypasses the garish mall pop of Phair's Neptunes' productions and goes straight for the pop of Somebody's Miracle. Bleeding Heart Graffiti has more ambition than Somebody's Miracle, however -- for one, Gordon is hungrier than Phair, itching for a little bit of her reputation or exposure, so she's written a tighter album, and her performances are infused with a sense of purpose. The record is mannered and tasteful, although the songs aren't bad and Gordon is earnest enough. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Give Nina Gordon credit for this: as her former bandmate Louise Post entrenches Veruca Salt in the sound and ...
