Though the Black Keys resemble post-punk garage revivalists like the White Stripes, and are likely to raise an eyebrow among old-school blues purists, the duo packs a serious blues punch. The minimal sound of RUBBER FACTORY moves on the rickety skeleton of Dan Auerbach's fuzzed-out guitar and Patrick Carney's no-frills drumming, and stays true to the raw, electric blues for which the Fat Possum label (the Black Keys' home) is rightfully famous.
RUBBER FACTORY bears the ghosts of Fat Possum artists like Junior Kimbrough and CeDell Davis, and through them, naturally, electric pioneers like Muddy Waters. The Keys mine this tradition admirably, with a sincere approach to the blues idiom bolstered by Auerbach's soulful vocals and the duo's stripped-down, juke-joint sound. But the Keys are not merely paying homage. Instead, they layer funky grooves ("The Desperate Man"), NUGGETS-inspired grunge ("10 A.M. Automatic"), a love of 1970s hard rock ("Grown So Ugly"), and the influence of contemporary indie rock (the acoustic "The Lengths") on their blues structures. In doing so, they achieve a ragged hybrid that stays fiercely true to the roots of blues, while updating the genre for younger generations.

I cant believe how tight the sound is for only 2 members. They have a great blues sound with catchy lyrics. Submitted by dgeurts (Depere,WI,USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Modern garage blues The Black Keys take an old style blues sound, mix in some modern garage rock style, and create a raunchy, rootsy album that I keep spinning over and over in my CD player. Great vocals, too, which are in short supply in the current rock world. Submitted by rmacd (New York, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Amazing two-piece Not just taking into accounnt that the band are a two-piece, but they are awesome players and dan's guitar riffs and vocals are amazingly soulful. A great band and a true homage to blues roots. Submitted by Mtfragort (Belfast, Northern Ireland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Rubber Factory songs
$19.99 The 26 tracks on this anthology have two things in common: all were released on Laurie or affiliated labels, and all were co-written or written by Ernie Maresca (who is the featured artist on four of the songs, too). Maresca is most known as the composer or co-composer of Dion's "Runaround Sue," "The Wanderer," and "Lovers Who Wander," as well as for his own 1962 hit "Shout! Shout! (Knock Yourself Out)." But did his talent merit a sweep through the secondary flops from his pen, some of which didn't come out until the 1980s (though apparently everything here was recorded between the late '50s and early '70s)? To be harsh, no. It is a jumble of largely mediocre, formulaic pop/rock, much of it indebted to the doo wop music of the late '50s and early '60s, even if much of it was actually recorded in the mid- to late '60s. Some of it is worth more than one listen, including the early Dion & the Belmonts singles "No One Knows" and "A Lover's Prayer," though those have long been easily acquired elsewhere. The 1966 Chiffons cuts "Open Your Eyes (I Will Be There)" and "Up on the Bridge" show a greater pop-soul sophistication than the other material, though they're ...
