Now this is more like it! Signing with a proper label and recording 2004's Spell of Retribution in a suitable studio not only helped the Chasm obtain a professional-sounding album, it served to reinvigorate their songwriting. To put it as gently as possible, the preceding Conjuration of the Spectral Empire, besides sounding like it was recorded in a broom closet, had shown worrying signs of creative stagnation that not even the Chasm's innately complex songwriting seemed capable of overcoming. But, thanks to their seemingly bottomless (as in a chasm -- get it?) stash of battle-ready metal riffs (fit to rival latter-day epic thrashers Dark Angel), and a renewed commitment to slapping them together in unexpected combinations, the Chicago-based group may have found a way out of their labyrinthine conundrum. The proof, as they say, is in the pudding, and, with its cycling melodic lick, opening instrumental (some things never change) "From the Curse, a Scourge..." harks back to heavy metal's more innocent, categorically undiluted old days. Moving right along, recognizably challenging material like "Conqueror & Warlord" and "Remains of the Covenant" mark a return to the Chasm's clever and inventive, multi-part works of old; the melodic doom passages of "Retribution of the Lost Years" resumes the band's long-running "I, the Pastfinder" series with memorable and emotionally complex results, and "Fortress" affords one of the most dazzling displays of full-on speed-thrashing to be found in this or any other decade. Cherry-top all these with frontman Daniel Corchado's enduring dedication to penning ever-obscure, but thoughtful, occult-based fantasy metal lyrics (as evocative as anyone who actually reads heavy metal lyrics could ever expect), and the Chasm's reputation for meticulously crafted thrash/death/black metal would appear to be reestablished. In other words, Spell of Retribution is a clear return to form. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia Spell Of Retribution Music Chasm Spell Of Retribution Songs Spell Of Retribution Music Spell Of Retribution Music Review Purchase Spell Of Retribution CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Kreator Pleasure To Kill CD (1986) Remastered

| | Coroner Punishment For Decadence CD (1988)
Spell Of Retribution CD music
$10.45 Most anyone still doubting Coroner's merits as anything but "the band formed by Celtic Frost's old roadies" was likely silenced by their very impressive second album, 1988's Punishment for Decadence. Though not nearly as adventurous as their previous employers early on, the members of Coroner had the clear advantage of being incredibly gifted musicians from day one; and aesthetically, they evidently already aspired to become the thrash metal power trio equivalent of Rush by splitting songwriting duties between guitarist Tommy T. Baron and bassist/singer Ron Ross, ...

Spell Of Retribution album
$9.75 Considering their cinematic scope, it's fitting that the songs on DEADWING were actually inspired by a film script written by Porcupine Tree mastermind Steven Wilson. Not that this should come as any surprise to longtime fans who know the UK act's reputation for churning out epic progressive rock so sonically descriptive that it's practically ...

| | Overkill W.F.O. CD (1994)
Spell Of Retribution music CDs
$12.19 Overkill's second release for Atlantic Records, W.F.O. probably represents the formal beginnings of a '90s commercial swoon for the thrash metal band. The group had formed on the East Coast during the early-'80s thrash heyday, and somehow managed to make a name for itself within a genre dominated by mostly West Coast artists like Metallica, Slayer, and Megadeth. It seemed like there was very little room for artists from New York's metal underground in the very tight quarters of aggressive metal's small but staunchly loyal market. With the exception of Anthrax, there weren't too many bands capable of making a real mark on the national metal scene, but Overkill was never discouraged, and on a couple of occasions (most notably after the 1991 release of the band's finest effort, Horrorscope) it seemed that things might work out for the group. ...
| | Whitesnake Ready An' Willing CD (1980) (Import) France
Spell Of Retribution songs
$23.65 French reissue is a remastered picture disc with four extra songs and new artwork. Slipcase contains a French/English book with a band biography.
Despite benefiting from the expert assistance of legendary producer Martin Birch (Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, later Iron Maiden) Whitesnake's early studio albums all tended to sound unexplainably flat. Their fourth effort, 1980's Ready an' Willing, was no exception, but it did make up for this somewhat with solid songwriting. In fact, David Coverdale and company were growing increasingly more consistent and self-assured with each record, and this album's first half shows great progress over the previous year's hit-and-miss Lovehunter. Opener "Fool for Your Lovin'" was their best single yet, as well as their highest charting; with its clever combination of hit-savvy chorus and authentic bluesy resignation, it set the template for subsequent triumphs, and the fact that Coverdale re-recorded it (in disappointing pop-metal fashion) ...
| | Ultimate Reggae CD (2003)
Spell Of Retribution album
$12.65 UTV's Ultimate Reggae is something of a successor to previous reggae compilations issued by different branches of the Universal Music Group of labels, notably 1998's Pure Reggae and 1999's Reggae Party, at least in the sense that, if you wonder why a particular classic reggae track, such as Desmond Dekker & the Aces' "Israelites," is missing, it may be found on one of the earlier collections, which were chosen by the same compilers. Still, this one differs from those predecessors in its breadth. As is true of the Ultimate collections assembled by sister label Hip-O, this one attempts to justify its title by licensing tracks beyond the already extensive Universal catalog, so that, for example, Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now," Third World's "1865 (96 Degrees in the Shade)," and Peter Tosh's "Equal Rights," all of which are owned by Sony, are included. The most obvious exclusion is anything by Bob Marley & the Wailers, reggae's greatest act. Since Marley's catalog is under Universal's purview and tracks were included on the previous compilations, his absence ...
| | Marduk Dark Endless CD (2005) (Import) Bonus Tracks; England; Limited Edition; Digipak
Spell Of Retribution CD music
$18.39 In 2007, Regain Records reissued several albums Marduk had recorded in the '90s, including Dark Endless, Those of the Unlight, Opus Nocturne and Heaven Shall Burn. The oldest of the bunch was Dark Endless. Recorded in 1992, Dark Endless was Marduk's first official full-length album, although not the very first thing they recorded (the infamously titled Fuck Me Jesus demo of 1991 had already earned them a small cult following in the Scandinavian extreme metal scene). Of course, a lot of things changed in extreme metal between 1992 and 2007. The death metal/black metal field became more diverse, Scandinavia became the part of the world with the heaviest concentration of death ...
