Soul To Soul Movie Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) A Must See! This new DVD/CD release of the 1971 documentary film, "Soul To Soul" is even more powerful to see now than it was then. This is the real deal y'all! Ike and Tina Turner, Santana, The Staple Singers, Les McCann & Eddie Harris, The Voices of East Harlem, and the one and only Wilson Pickett, tearing it up in his prime, gives us all a lesson in the meaning of Soul! And oh that scream, full of fire and the joyous pulse of life, whips the crowd into a near frenzy! Don't miss it. Submitted by Bob (Santa Monica, Ca.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Wonderful idea to put this out on DVD!!! This has to be one of the most forgotten music movies alongside "Save The Children" and it's soundtrack! Not like "Wattstax", this movie is much more like a documentery. But where else can you see groups like the Voices of East Harlem, or Tina Turner learning an African song and nailing it??? The pairing of the original soundtrack is also a huge plus!!! Great flick, but it does take some patience because the music is spread out a bit thin. The numerous audio commentary tracks are also a huge plus, and the packaging is so great!!! Soul fans, add this to your ever growing colection!!! Submitted by KC (NY, NY) Was This Review Helpful? $14.49 Director Mel Stuart battled for years to get the clearance to release this film on video. Lucky for us, because even today, it is an incredibly moving portrait of a community coming together in the aftermath of the violent Watts riots. The emotion conveyed in the music and subjects of the film culminate in a revealing portrait of a strong African American community that resonates today.
The film centers on the Watts Summer Festival concert at the Los Angeles Coliseum in August, 1972. Unique performances from Isaac Hayes, The Staple Singers, Rufus Thomas, The Bar-Kays, and a host of others, are intercut with interviews with Watts's residents. Some of the residents are celebrities and future celebrities, such as Richard Pryor well before he became famous, and THE LOVE BOAT'S Ted ...
