| | Diana Ross #1'S CD (2003) Remastered; Special Edition
Classic Christmas CD music
$10.59 Recorded between 1964 & 1981. Includes liner notes by Brian Chin.
Though not as critically revered as label-mates Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder, the Supremes were the most popular Motown act of the 1960s. Not only did the group rack up a string of #1 singles, that, in terms of frequency and quality often rivaled that of the Beatles, they were one of the first black combos in America to truly achieve mainstream white acceptance.
In many ways, the Supremes' music represented the Motown sound distilled to its essence; Hitsville USA's throbbing bass, relentlessly danceable drum beats, and ingenious arrangements were never so purely and perfectly geared for maximum pop appeal as on early hits such as "Where Did Our Love Go" and "Stop! In the Name of Love." On later, edgier tracks, like "You Keep Me Hangin' On" and "Love Child," ...
| | Andy Williams Christmas Album CD (1963) Remastered
Classic Christmas music CDs
$6.09 Popular songs are often associated with the vocalists that made them famous but few artists actually have the distinction of having a "theme" song along the lines of Bob Hope with "Thanks for the Memories." Even fewer can claim to have two theme songs attached to them and Andy Williams is one of those fortunate stars. After "Moon River" became forever linked to Williams, he recorded a holiday song for his first Christmas album that gave him a yuletide hit and theme song. "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" was the right song at the right time for Williams when he began to perform it on his highly successful NBC Christmas specials that featured the whole Williams clan. Both the song and the television ...

| | Curtis Jones Complete Works, Vol. 2 (June 1938 - June 1939) CD (1995) Import
Classic Christmas music CDs
$13.25 Back in the 1990s, Document reissued the "complete recorded works" of singing blues pianist Curtis Jones in four volumes, covering the years 1937-1953. Volume two presented 25 sides dating from a 12-month period beginning and ending in the summers of 1938 and 1939. Jones was signed to Vocalion at the time, and the "Reefer Hound Blues" was so popular that it was also issued on the Sears, Roebuck & Co.'s Conqueror label (tracks 13 and 14). Fortunately for posterity, Vocalion and Bluebird were competing for record sales, and this resulted in large catalogs which today serve as valuable reservoirs of classic prewar blues. While some of the players remain unidentified (including an electrically amplified guitarist on tracks 7-12), we do know that Jones used guitarists Joe McCoy, Willie Bee, and, on tracks 15-25, Hobson "Hot Box" Johnson. Charlie McCoy plays mandolin on "Who You're Hunchin'" (which makes for an interesting comparison ...

| | Adelbert Von Deyen Painted Black CD (2006)
Classic Christmas album
$22.75 From 1978 to 1987 Adelbert von Deyen released 9 albums with electronic music on the german sky-label. After this he spends his time being a landscape-painter in northern germany without musical activity. In spring 2006 he got a synthi-keyboard as a present from a girlfriend to play it just for fun. And so he comes "Back To Life", records the music feverish day and night, and a few weeks later he had created PAINTED BLACK: A straight and melodic musical selfportrait, sometimes cheerful, but also sad and soulful in the next moment. By the way: the carbon-cd is coloured in deep black at the front and back side. Adelbert says "Hello Again", wondering as "Time Goes By". He plays a cheerful electronic reggae called "Gonnemeise" and than his sad "Summer Elegy". After eating an delicious "Greek Salad" he takes you by the ...
