Rilo Kiley: Jenny Lewis (vocals, guitar, harmonica, Mellotron, keyboards); Blake Sennett (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, Mellotron, ARP synthesizer); Jason Boesel (vocals, drums, tambour, percussion); Pierre de Reeder (bass instrument). For More Adventurous, Rilo Kiley's Warner-distributed hello to the big time, the Los Angeles band is more cohesive, more spotless, and tidier in its tangle of indie pop, torch song, and too-cool-for-school cynicism than ever before. This time out they favor craft over ruckus, rarefied over reckless. Sometimes Adventurous goes too far -- like Belle & Sebastian, RK's fastidiousness can become a sticky glaze. (The overwrought sway of "Does He Love You?" comes to mind.) But the album is a mostly-perfect collection of the various sounds the band does best, wrapped around easily findable hooks. They're well-dressed indie kids ready and quite able to charm the mainstream. Jenny Lewis' vocals are lighter than clouds and Petula Clarksweet, even if she occasionally spits venom. "Any asshole can open up a museum/Put all the things he loves on display," she dismisses in the Luna-like opener "It's a Hit." But Lewis' characters' faults and failings are just bruises on the Rilo Kiley fruit, blemishes that characterize the band's effortlessly clean swirl of live string arrangements, subtle synth/keys, and glowing acoustic guitar. "I Never" is a full-on, cast of thousands soundstage production, a robust, keening ballad filled with pedal steel, fuzzed-out Beatles guitar soloing, and Lewis' gargantuan voice. The title track takes us back to Rilo Kiley's earlier work with its atmospheric country feel, while "Love and War [11/11/46]" is refreshingly propulsive -- it could be Stereophonics covering Lone Justice. Most of the album's quieter moments are equally strong, if somewhat grayed out. Adventurous' stylistic restlessness might take some getting used to for new listeners. But fans from the Saddle Creek days will enjoy the greater attention to detail, and everyone will love the bountiful hooks. ~ Johnny Loftus Much has been made about Rilo Kiley's fusion of country and rock but with MORE ADVENTUROUS, the band's first recording released outside of the Saddle Creek camp, this California quartet creates a sound more along the lines of Belle & Sebastian's brand of twee pop. The bittersweet ting of primary lyricist and singer Jenny Lewis's words is offset by a leavened use of string arrangements. This combination proves irresistible, particularly on the anti-war opener "It's a Hit," with its compelling mix of brassy fanfare, shoo-bop harmonies, and Velvet Underground-like guitar riffs, all of which only a hint at the audio delights lying in wait over the course of this record. Mellotron and Moog add a melancholy air to the heartbreak-defining "Does He Love You?," and "I Never" hints at Rilo Kiley's country side via Lewis's aching, Loretta Lynn-like phrasing and the atmospheric blending of strings and pedal steel. This adventurous musical outing leaves room for Blake Sennett's lo-fi, solo acoustic tune "Ripchord," the Blondie-esque "Portions for Foxes," and "Love and War (11/11/46)," a New Wave-like rocker inspired by Lewis's visit to her grandfather in a VA hospital.

Rilo Kiley More Adventurous Songs More Adventurous Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Great--wonderful music I love this music. It should be included in many other year-in-review besides this one. Submitted by patfinder (Arlington, TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
RiloKiley's third release better than their first two Both "More Adventurous" and "The Execution of All Things" are upgrades from "Takeoffs & Landings" -- for the latter album, most songs sound good, but they all sort-of sound like the same song (not much variety from track to track). "More Adventurous" could not contrast this more -- each track ha a different sound. So, not only is the album as a whole more listenable, but the individual tracks are very good. There are several tracks that better than anything Rilo Kiley had done to date. Submitted by adammcd (Mpls, MN, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great Album I was sad when I heard that Rilo Kiley was starying from their Indie Roots and I wasn't even sure if I was going to get that album for that reason..but i'm glad I did I might sound like a Pansy but this Album has the first song that has ever really made me cry..there have been a lot of songs that have come close but never like this listen to the chorus lines in "A Man, Me, then Jim" and you'll know what I mean but buy this album it's really spectacular and it's solid track for track Submitted by Daniel (Colorado Springs,CO) Was This Review Helpful? great cd... I wasn't a fan before but even though i hated the other 2 albums i still wanted to give this one a go. i'm glad i did. it blends alternative rock and country to great effect and jenny lewis' vocals bring so much to it. highlights include "portions for foxes", "accidental death", "more adventurous" and the rockin' "love and war" ~Emily LaVeerne music reviewer Submitted by emily (ft worth tx usa) Was This Review Helpful? $11.59 Almost four years after Fountains of Wayne's mainstream breakthrough, 2003's WELCOME INTERSTATE MANAGERS, the New York City-based quartet returned with the full-length studio album TRAFFIC AND WEATHER. Another set of exuberant power-pop, this 14-track outing finds songwriters Chris Collingwood (lead vocals, guitar) and Adam Schlesinger (bass, backing vocals) once again offering up more catchy hooks and melodies in one tune than most bands can muster on an entire record. While the group's 1960s/'70s rock influences are still readily apparent (see the Beatlesque "Yolanda Hayes" and the Warren Zevon-like "'92 Subaru"), Collingwood and Schlesinger are capable of sounding utterly contemporary, as on the energetic and undeniably enjoyable opener, "Someone to Love," proving that FOW has something for almost any pop/rock fan. Fountains of Wayne finally managed to score that big hit single their fans always knew they had in them when "Stacy's Mom" became a fluke hit a few months after the release of their third album, 2003's Welcome Interstate Mangers. Anybody worried that success had spoiled the power pop quartet shouldn't find ...
