| | The Ultimate Bee Gees CDs (2009)
Ultimate Remixes CD music
$15.49 Functioning as something of a replacement for the 2001 collection Their Greatest Hits: The Record, The Ultimate Bee Gees covers much of the same ground as that double-disc set, albeit in not quite so linear a fashion. The Record marched through its 40 tracks chronologically, opening with the stately baroque Beatlesque pop of the '60s and then winding through the '70s, whereas this opens with the bright, fabulous blast of "You Should Be Dancing" and remains in their late-'70s heyday for a while before fast-forwarding to such latter-day adult contemporary hits as "One." We don't get to "I've Gotta Get a Message to You" and "I Started a Joke" until halfway through the second disc, and this jumbled, almost haphazard sequencing is a little disconcerting since it appears to follow no true rhyme or reason. Nevertheless, ...
| | Isaac Hayes Shaft (Deluxe Edition) CD (1971) Bonus Track; Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Ultimate Remixes music CDs
$9.75 Despite its codification into our collective pop culture consciousness, Isaac Hayes' "Theme From Shaft" is a highly original composition. It's been remade by Hayes himself for the remade Shaft film, and appropriately kicks off this collection of tunes from the movie by some of R&B's New Jacks.
A diverse selection of artists encompass the collection, from lascivious soul stirrer R. Kelly to the rugged Latin hip-hop of Fulanito, along with many other noteworthy diversions that represent the many flavors of contemporary urban soul. Most of the material focuses on John Shaft's street smarts and bravado, or the film's pimps, hoes, and gangsta imagery. As expected, Southern hip-hop is well represented, with Outkast, Mystikal, and Big Gipp from Goodie Mob contributing. The tracks offer typically gritty observations on street life, over bleak, minor chords and busy percussion. T.I.P. featuring Beanie Sigel offers "2 Glock 9's," one of the soundtrack's most rugged grooves, a minimal, stripped-down drum break that stutters and skids backwards and forwards over a Notorious BIG vocal sample and is easily the eeriest track on the album. The only light relief is provided by Too $hort's "Pimp Sh*t," a humorous foray into playa politics.
The title track's perennially recognizable hi-hat and wah-wah guitar intro, interlocking horn/string parts, and smooth, proto-rap verses conjure the name SHAFT as surely as a snake-charmer's incantation. It also conjures the name of ...

| | Maxwell Now CD (2001)
Ultimate Remixes CD music
$8.49 "Lifetime" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
Rebounding from the slight sophomore lag generated by 1998's EMBRYA, Maxwell's follow-up NOW abandons the neo-soul man's usual M.O. of using a conceptual arc of songs, and instead focuses on individual cuts. Romance remains the main ingredient found in this Brooklyn native's banquet of song, and although he stands firmly in the neo-soul camp of D'Angelo and Erykah, his use of various stylistic nuances once again stamps him as an original item. Twangy country-flavored licks and subtle DJ scratches pop up throughout the lament "Was My Girl," and scratchy rock guitar riffs are sparingly used over the heavy groove of "Temporary Nite." At the centerpiece is a studio version of Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work," a staple of Maxwell's concerts previously showcased on the live 1997 EP UNPLUGGED. Delivered with a crystalline falsetto, delicate strings and subtle pedal steel, it's a daring move worthy of Prince-ly accolades.
Elsewhere, Maxwell easily moves between sly funk (a percolating "Get To Know Ya") and sleek, between-the-sheets posturing (the Isley Brothers-flavored "Changed"). Other highlights include the goosebump-inducing ...

Ultimate Remixes songs
$9.45 Third World was one of the first reggae bands to actively court worldwide success. They managed to get it, too, with their pulsating reggae-soul cover of the O'Jays' "Now That We Found Love" from 1979. 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Third World leads off with that song and collects more from their golden period between 1977 and 1979 on Island Records as well as a couple of stragglers from the late '80s and early '90s. The '70s material far outclasses the latter-day work and, despite the pop reputation the band was saddled with, could be as powerful and righteous as any other exalted reggae artists of the day. Their vocals are rich and seamlessly smooth, and the songs wrap political messages in sweet soul (check out "Cool Meditation" or "1865 [96 Degrees in the Shade]" for great examples of this). The band also had a bold streak and their records didn't shy away from dub techniques ("Satta Massagana") or straight-up disco ("Talk to Me"). This would have been a handy collection of their finest work if not for the inclusion of two tracks from 1989 ("Reggae Ambassador," "Forbidden Love") and one from 1992 ("Committed") that sound far too over-produced and sterile. It also leaves off any of their fine work after jumping to Columbia in the early '80s. The double-disc Reggae Ambassadors: 20th Anniversary Collection and the single disc Ultimate Collection are the only collections to compile songs from all the labels for which the band recorded. The bottom line is that, if you want the ...
