| | Everette Harp First Love CD (2009)
Nocturnal Tourist
$14.84 Audio Mixer: Erik Zobler. Liner Note Author: Everette Harp. On FIRST LOVE, contemporary jazz saxophonist and composer Everette Harp moves deeper into the space he addressed on 2007's excellent MY INSPIRATION. Produced by George Duke, the meld of acoustic and electric instruments here is perfectly balanced. Melodic and harmonic structures are much more complex and don't always fit the C-jazz cookie-cutter mold. Check his original "The Council of Nicea," one of the most satisfying things here. Harp's tenor is accompanied by James Genus' acoustic bass, and some spot-on breaks by Terri Lyne Carrington, a beautiful bluesy, hard bop trumpet solo by Michael "Patches" Stewart, and Lenny Castro's hand percussion. Directing the band is Duke ...

Nocturnal Tourist
$13.69 Paris Resident DJ And Producer.
Personnel: DJ Sleep (turntables). Audio Mixer: Kid Loco. Photographer: Ali Kepenek. Arrangers: Dade; Wells. In the late '90s, it may be seen as obsolete to try and release a compilation that is neither 1) trance nor 2) trance. Yes, while the popular dance world was spinning on its own narrow axis, there were still musicians like Kid Loco bucking the trends and releasing chill-out albums like this: his own clandestinely mischievous installment in the DJ-Kicks series. The problem is that despite such a non-conformist stance, there's something wrong in its unpleasant mesh of moods. This means that while including songs such as the easy-breathing trip-hop of Jazzanova's "Introspection" or the cycling mantra of Underworld's "Blueski" make for an interesting mix, the fact that they are so close next to so many songs centered around childish jabs (a porno-sampling track by Common Ground, the cartoon-squealing track by Tom Tyler, etc.), the tones tend to cancel each other out. Loco seems lost in deciding whether to make a straight-forward, jazz-centric, chill-out album or a slightly nutty experiment. If he went confidently into one direction, the results would have been much better. Because, again, for every magnetic track like Boards of Canada' "Happy Cycling," there is a silly track like a remix of Deep Season's "Jesus Christ Almighty" right next door. In other words, right when the mood is being set, ...
| | Janis Ian Aftertones CD (1976) (Import) Import; Australia
Nocturnal Tourist
$22.75 This is a 2004 Australian import edition of American folk icon Janis Ian's AFTERTONES. On Aftertones, Janis Ian (guitar/piano/vocals) continued the artistic, and to a lesser extent, the commercial success she garnered on her previous effort Between The Lines (1975). Once again, she assembled some of the finest session musicians from the Big Apple to animate her intimately sensitive sonic portraits and caricatures. Although Ian would not surpass the universality of "At Seventeen," much of this disc continues the theme and moods expressed as far back as Stars (1974). Ian's advanced folk sensibilities are emotional progressions away from the weepy and introspective nature heard from her mid-'70s singer/songwriter contemporaries. Part of Ian's enticement is the marriage between achingly beautiful melodies and thoroughly personalized lyrics. The album commences with the title track setting the tenor and sonic ambiance. The acoustic guitar and compact string section lend to "Aftertones" slightly baroque feel, which adds to the song's palpable isolation ("'Til all that's left to see are aftertones/I take them home/ We live alone"). The beautifully bitter "Love Is Blind," and the harrowing "Don't Cry, Old Man" are piercing ...
| | Mark London Sims Strange Groove Picnic CD (2006)
Nocturnal Tourist
$12.69 Electric bassist and composer Mark London Sims is an outstanding musician capable of bringing his style and finesse to nearly any genre of music. An intuitive player in jazz, R&B, reggae and beyond, Sims has forged a path through music including work with free jazz-meets-world music pioneer Don Cherry (innovative collaborator with Ornette Coleman, and father of Neneh Cherry), and with Ben Harper, Dave Wakeling, hip hop star Sonja Marie and reggae icon Joe Higgs. An appetite for change mixes with an abiding respect for the specific musical traditions he engages in. Sims comes to his eclecticism naturally. In the ‘80s, after studying at Cal Arts with such teachers as Charlie Haden and James Newton, Sims quickly plied his skills ...
