In the early 2000s, more and more jazz musicians began breaking away from the Great American Songbook. Rather than limiting themselves to the standard tunes from Tin Pan Alley and Broadway, jazz artists started to embrace pop music to a greater extent. Pianist Brad Mehldau was one of the most noted proponents of this shift.

On the 2004 solo outing, LIVE IN TOKYO, Mehldau further distances himself from the older pianistic traditions of Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, et al. This is evidenced by his choice of repertoire, which includes two songs by melancholy British folk icon Nick Drake ("Things Behind the Sun" and "River Man") and one by rock renegades Radiohead ("Paranoid Android"). Mehldau's interpretations also avoid bebop stylings and instead draw from a more eclectic blend of atonality, minimalism, and abstraction. Mehldau's version of "Paranoid Android" is a good example of this musical stew; the song is marked by haunting chordal textures and complex melodic gestures. Of course, the track list does reveal some familiar pieces by George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Thelonious Monk. However, these, too, are treated with the same kind of conceptual approach that Mehldau fearlessly applies to Drake and Radiohead.

Photographers: Ye Rin Mok; Michael "Mick" Wilson.

Personnel: Brad Mehldau (piano); Brad Mehldau.

Recording information: Sumida Triphony Hall, Tokyo, Japan.

Down Beat (p.65) - 4 stars out of 5 - "'From This Moment On' comes closest to the Gershwin concert-pop model of theme and variations, growing in complexity and scale, with intricate contrapuntal figures that both lift and challenge the theme."

VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD  (2002)

Live In Tokyo album
CD $6.39  4.3 stars Audio Samples
This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood ...

Brad Mehldau Anything Goes CD  (2004)

Live In Tokyo CD music
CD $14.79  3 stars Audio Samples
Ironically, Anything Goes would have been a more fitting title for pianist Brad Mehldau's previous effort, the idiosyncratic and experimental Largo. Completely eschewing the electronic flourishes and horn sections that characterized the 2002 Jon Brion-produced album as Mehldau's most adventurous release up to that point, Anything Goes is actually a return to a more traditional approach. Featuring his longtime sidemen bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jorge Rossy, Mehldau has crafted a thoughtful and pretty standards-based album. ...

CD $13.49  5 stars Audio Samples
This exceptional date by Dave Holland Big Band was recorded in 2002 in New York, yet remained unreleased until 2005. As is to be expected, Holland assembled a fine cast of seasoned and young players, some of whom are veterans of Holland's quintets and quartets. These are four saxophones -- two alto, tenor and baritone -- three trumpets and trombones, and vibes as well as bass and drums. They include Chris Potter and Robin and Duane Eubanks, Antonio Hart, Steve Nelson, Josh Roseman, Billy Kilson, Taylor Haskins, Gary Smulyan, Jonathan Arons and Alex Sipiagin. The music centers around the opening four-part "Monterey Suite," a tour de force commissioned by the Monterey Jazz Festival and originally performed there in 2001. ...

Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD  (2005)

Live In Tokyo album
CD $13.75  4.8 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically ...
