E.S.T.: Esbjörn Svensson (piano, keyboards); Dan Berglund (bass guitar); Magnus Öström (drums, percussion). Available for quite some time as an import before the tiny Philadelphia-based indie 215 Records finally released it stateside, complete with a bonus live DVD, 2003's Seven Days of Falling is every bit the equal of E.S.T.'s earlier records. Misguided American media comparisons to the highly overrated the Bad Plus have done pianist Esbjörn Svensson, bassist Dan Berglund, and drummer Magnus Ostrom a grave disservice, as their music is far more wide-ranging and much less gimmicky. Despite occasional forays into rock influences like "O.D.R.I.P." and a few brief passages that skirt the edges of outside free improv, there's an elegance and shapeliness to the trio's work that has more in common with the cerebral cool of Bill Evans (particularly on the quietly gorgeous opener "Ballad for the Unborn") or the effortless melodic grace of the Vince Guaraldi Trio ("Evening in Atlantis," "Believe, Beleft, Below"). Seven Days of Falling is a ravishingly beautiful, musically captivating album. Bonus track alert: hidden after the nervy "O.D.R.I.P." is the Sinatra-like ballad "Love Is Real," featuring guest vocals from Josh Haden, son of Charlie and brother of Petra. ~ Stewart Mason Swedish jazz trio E.S.T. continues their adventurous expansion of the acoustic jazz palette on this 2004 release. Though steeped in post-bop and 1960s-era modal explorations, and committed to a traditional sound, pianist Esbjorn Svensson, bassist Daniel Berglud, and drummer Magnus Ostrom play music with a distinctly postmodern sensibility. On "Did they Ever Tell Cousteau?," for example, Ostrom's skittering, brush-generated rhythms on snare and cymbals reference 21st-century electronica, while the piano and bass create expansive, ambient patterns. "In My Garage" tumbles along with the propulsion of a rock song, while "O.D.R.I.P." recalls the wide architecture of postrock acts like Tortoise. But the members of E.S.T. are not merely stylistic magpies. The musicians play with deep feeling, a fact particularly noticeable on SEVEN DAYS OF FALLING's many slower, more lyrical cuts. The opener, "Ballad for the Unborn," is as quiet and haunting as its title suggests. "Evening in Atlantis," a showcase for Svensson, is made of wispy, delicate strains, and "Believe, Beleft, Below" conjures the image of Erik Satie playing in a smoky nightclub. With their penchant for evocative, poetic playing, and their equal dedication to incorporating modern influences into their music, E.S.T. ranks among the most engaging groups on the jazz scene.Uncut (1/04, p.108) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[H]aunting themes, scintillating interplay and thrilling improvisations...among the most intrepid, expressive jazz outfits of their time." Down Beat (p.73) - "[T]he momentum and tension gradually intensify as Ostrom demonstrates his usual grace and taste around the kit." Amazing Even though this is E.S.T.'s 7th studio album, they still have a lot of new things to contribute with to modern jazz. Classic jazz is mixed with modern sounds (a lot of the credit for this goes to the drummer, Magnus Öström, who experiments with different kinds of percussion instruments) and turns out music that is almost perfect.
A hot tip is to continue listening even when the last tune seems to be over (O.D.R.I.P.), as the trio do one of their "specials" and have a song version of Believe, Belft, Below (track no.6) that starts in about the 12th minute.

Can't Stop Dreaming has a rather tangled release history. It was originally issued in Japan in 1999 on the BMG International label, and in 2003 it appeared in America but missing two tracks. Anyway, as those who witnessed the resurgence of Hall & Oates will attest, Hall has never sounded better. His vocal range is all that it once was and more. He is still, along with his main collaborator, Alan Gorrie from the Average White ...

After establishing himself the eccentric but interesting Monkey Grip, Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman resumed his solo career in 1976 with Stone Alone. Sadly, this album lacks the focus and solid songs of the previous album and ends up feeling like the typical rock star's ego-trip side project. Stone Alone can't be faulted for ambition, though: nearly every ...

Seven Days Of Falling
$11.89 Liner Note Author: Michael Azerrad. Recording information: 12/1992-03/1993. Photographers: Wyatt Troll; Charles Peterson . Given that music was ostensibly the most important thing in Kurt Cobain's life, the soundtrack to the 2007 documentary ABOUT A SON offers as much insight into Cobain's heart and mind as the film itself. The collection works as both a blueprint for Cobain's musical vision, and, well, a soundtrack to his tragic life. Songs from Scratch Acid, the Melvins, and Bad Brains present the basic sonic template for Nirvana; the Vaselines and Half Japanese hint at Cobain's playful side and love of quirky pop; while CCR's "Up Around the Bend" reminds fans that Cobain was, at times, just a normal fellow from the woods. Interspersed throughout are vocal snippets of Cobain that offer a haunting counterpoint to the music while reinforcing everything it stood for in his life. More than simply a companion CD to a film, this compilation stands alone as a remarkable portrait of an amazing artist. AJ Schnack's documentary Kurt Cobain: About a Son is constructed largely from interviews author/journalist Michael Azerrad conducted with the Nirvana singer/songwriter when he was writing their authorized biography, Come as You Are. About a Son is also a biography, but it relies on Cobain's own recollections, pairing it with still photos and newly shot footage of Olympia, Seattle, and Aberdeen, WA, all intended to create the perception of seeing the world through Cobain's eyes. There is no Nirvana footage in the movie and there are no Nirvana songs on the ...
