1 star What are they trying to prove?
Admittedly, I bought this album with certain expectations; none of them were met. Instead of Lovano and Brecker swinging in a more or less straightforward manner they are into what I would call a semi-free, world-music style. Among other things, producing (intentionally) squeeks and squawks on their horns. In addition, all three felt it appropriate to play on various exotic instruments, which they have not mastered, to say the least. Liebman played with his typical strangled soprano sound and grinding, wrenching expressionistic "emotion".

Two of the most consistently exciting and inventive talents in jazz--drummer Jack DeJohnette and guitarist Bill Frisell--join forces on this unique and wonderful outing. Those who suspect that an album-length duet between a guitarist and a drummer couldn't be as rich and fully realized as a larger ensemble obviously don't know the work of either artist.
DeJohnette has played with everyone from Miles Davis on, and is still one of the most sophisticated and challenging percussionists on the scene. And Frisell's genre-spanning excursions and otherworldly atmospheres (heightened by a liberal use of effects) must be heard to be believed. This set, recorded live at the Earshot Jazz Festival in 2001, takes the listener through 11 compositions that range from wildly experimental ("Cat and Mouse") to lushly ambient ("Storm Clouds and Mist") while hitting every gorgeous, thrilling point in between. Recommended.
This collaboration between drummer, pianist, and composer Jack DeJohnette and guitarist Bill Frisell, was recorded live at the Earshot Festival in 2001. But it doesn't end there. The pair, who had only played together once before on Don Byron's Romance with the Unseen, had a chance to listen to the tapes together and decided to add some additional production to the tracks. DeJohnette called in sound engineer Ben Surman, who added "additional production": basslines, ambient sounds, and other electronics and percussion.
