The fourth album from ambient shakers Sounds from the Ground, finds the two Londoners Nick Woolfson and Eliot James stepping back from the vocal-heavy warmth of NATURAL SELECTION and heading into a more chillbient, dub-style territory. There's still plenty of positive energy here; the soul shaking "Move On" has a sultry female vocal cooing over a wavy trip-hop groove that sounds just as ready for meditation as it does the dance floor. "Razz" brings a tabla-centric sense of stasis to its dub space frequencies, and there's some haunting ambient/trance lushness with "London Fields." When all that spacey loveliness proves too much, some serious street-cred-level funkiness comes along with "Ten Tons of Dope" which is served in extra-blunted fashion by a Dillinger vocal; and the bass line on "As the Day Goes By" is heavier than a kid's eyelids at 6 a.m., when this party is just getting started. In short, LUMINAL is mind candy at its finest; invigorating, contemplative, quietly spiritual, and lowdown funky all at once.

The Best Music Around............ This is one of the best cds I have purchased, period.
These are very talented artists, really in a class by themselves and if anything else comes from them I will buy. Submitted by oziris44 (South Beach, Fl, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Stunning An absolute stunning work, Luminal has remained in my car stereo for almost a year. As The Day Goes By is simply perfect, and Razz is divine. Only Ten Ton of Dope is a stinker, but out of the rest of the tracks, Move On and London Fields are knock outs. The rest are merely exceptional. I hope SFTG keeps up in this vein of music, I can't recommend this CD enough. Submitted by Mike (SF, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Excellent SFTG never cease to amaze. Another stellar performance. Submitted by darkStar (planet earth) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Essential Pebbles Vol. 1 CDs (1997)
Luminal music CDs
$15.25 The Essential Pebbles Collection, Vol. 1 is a budget-priced, two-CD set that serves two functions. The first, fulfilled by disc one, is to distill the first ten volumes of the Pebbles '60s garage rock singles compilation series. The second is a bonus disc full of even more insanely rare material that has never appeared on Pebbles albums or myriad other '60s compilations. Considering the staggering amount of material reissued by Archive International, in addition to myriad '60s compilations released by other companies worldwide, casual observers of this phenomenon might wonder what the fuss is all about. The singles compiled by these releases are from an era where local bands' records shared airplay with the major hitmakers. The Pebbles series' most important accomplishment has been to provide a glimpse of the musical life beyond the hits in constant rotation on many oldies radio stations.
Pebbles compiles the best independent-label '60s singles that weren't national hits, but their local reputations have insured that the records trade for high prices on the collectors' markets. Lack of significant sales outside of its geographical region doesn't mean that the records lack polish; tracks like the Motifs' "Someday" demonstrate a mix of Motown and Atlantic soul influences with some of the harder-edged British Invasion group sounds, while the bands from Chicago have a bluesy sound but incorporate other influences as well, like the jagged Zombies-esque organ solo on the Omens' "Searching." There was even a Pebbles ...

| | Moss Brothers On The North Side Of The Tree CD (1999)
Luminal album
$12.69 The preteen Moss Brothers "keep it real." While a lot of younger acts sing about romantic love for the opposite sex, Evan and Reuben Moss sing about their love for sports ("Baseball" and "Football All the Way"), family ("Grandpa Turns 80"), and music ("Guitar and Drums"). The hilarious "Hot Water" refers to their hatred of washing the dishes and other chores at the demand of their "mean" mom. This CD also includes fun tongue-in-cheek covers of "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" and "Ramblin' on My Mind." The Moss Brothers are not polished musicians like the Hanson brothers; in fact, they are not very good musicians, but their songs honestly reflect their lives. A fun listen. ~ Tim Griggs
"An instant classic. Go get it." Rasputin ManifestoTHIS IS THE DEBUT CD FROM THE MOSS BROTHERS! Their 2nd CD, Electricitation, was just released and features the bass playing of former-Metallica bassist Jason Newsted. He contacted the brothers upon hearing On The North Side of The Tree. As they say, the rest is history!Today's leading pop groups are mostly five-member boy bands and solo crooners whose music, critics complain, is contrived and formulaic. If anyone is bucking this trend, it's The Moss Brothers of Piedmont, California. They were only nine and elven years old when they made their debut CD, On The North Side Of The Tree, yet, Reuben and Evan were already so musically accomplished, their original material so well-conceived, that the brothers are sure to attract fans of not just their own age but ...
