If placing two great fiddlers like Kenny Baker and Bobby Hicks together sounds like a great idea, that's because it is. Darkness on the Delta isn't just a fiddle fest, however. Hicks and Baker are joined by banjoist Allen Shelton, mandolinists Larry Sledge and Buck White, guitarist Benny Williams, and bassist Roy Husky Jr. on 11 country-bluegrass classics. The presence of a band provides a nice underpinning for the fiddles, but also gives the songs weight and substance. While there are plenty of fine solos on the title cut and "Faded Love," Hicks and Baker's specialty is playing in unison, which creates a lovely, flowing sound that harks back to Western swing. This approach works particularly well on waltzes -- "McHattie's Waltz" and "Westphalia Waltz" -- and classics like Bill Monroe's sprightly "Tallahassee" and exciting "Louisville Breakdown." Since this is a pure instrumental affair, there's plenty of time for solo work from the other players, too, but no one shows off. Instead, all of the music feels organic and falls together beautifully. Originally recorded in 1980, Darkness on the Delta is rather short at 30 minutes, but everything included works exceptionally well and fiddle fans will be happy County reissued the album in 2004. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr.

Darkness On The Delta album
$6.59 LIVIN' LOVIN' LOSIN' won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Country Album. "How's The World Treating You" won for Best Country Collaboration With Vocals.
As prime architects of the high-lonesome harmony sound that is one of bluegrass's building blocks, Charlie & Ira Louvin have been enormously influential on several generations of bluegrass and country musicians (not to mention numerous artists from the pop/rock world). This tribute album allows some of those musicians to give something back to the Louvins' legacy. It's not surprising to hear impressive interpretations of this material from the bluegrass-schooled likes of Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell ("My Baby's Gone") or Marty Stuart & Del ...

| | Peter Rowan You Were There For Me CD (2004)
Darkness On The Delta songs
$14.15 One has to consider the collaborative union of renegade roots music guitarist Tony Rice and woolly Zen bluegrass legend Peter Rowan to be the most natural thing on earth and one that is long overdue. Both are true. While the two have played together on stages and even on record before, You Were There for Me marks their first full-fledged album collaboration. The program features no less than nine Rowan originals and a cover of Peter Lorin's fine "Cowboys and Indians." Rice is in fine playing form here, effortlessly underscoring and filling up Rowan's sung lines, and for his part, the songwriter is in fantastic voice. Accompanied throughout by bassist Bryn Bright and mandola and mandolin maestro Billy Bright -- with guest appearances by drummer Larry Atamanuik and bassist Tony Garnier as well as Rob Emery on harmony vocals on a track each -- the sound here is easy, free, and warm. But this is no mere feel-good jam recording. Instead, it is a collection of Rowan's most poetic material rendered with deep emotion, elegance, ...
| | James King Bluegrass Storyteller CD (2005)
Darkness On The Delta album
$14.65 While artists often seem to randomly name their latest effort, James King has carefully aligned content with title on Bluegrass Storyteller. The music, let there be no doubt, is traditional bluegrass, harking back to Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley. And the 13 songs, from "Coldest ...

| | Rodney Crowell Ain't Living Long Like This CD (1977)
Darkness On The Delta album
$10.55 Rodney Crowell's auspicious 1978 debut, Ain't Living Long Like This, not only showcases his songwriting prowess, but also his ability to deliver a song, whether it's one of his own or the work of another writer. Crowell possesses a sort of Everly Brothers, Nashville soul in his strong, emotive tenor, that's equally effective on the country-blues of Dallas Frazier's "Elvira," as it is on the rocking title cut or a country-folk ballad such as the self-penned "Song for the Life." Along with producer Brian Ahern (Emmylou Harris), Crowell employs a who's who of country and rock'n'roll session players, including James Burton and Glen D. Hardin, both of whom played with Elvis Presley and Gram Parsons, as well as enlisting the aid of artists such as Dr. John, Ry Cooder, Nicolette Larson, Emmylou Harris, Ricky Skaggs and Willie Nelson. As a writer, Crowell, who chose to include three terrific covers over any of his backlog of excellent ...

| | Joy Electric Tick Tock Treasury CD (2003)
Darkness On The Delta music CDs
$9.55 It's during the burbling, effortlessly melodic opening title track of Tick Tock Treasury that it dawns on you: Maintaining such musical amicability over an entire LP is next to impossible. Nevertheless, that's what Joy Electric mastermind Ronnie Martin largely succeeds at with his sixth full-length collection of new material. Constructed as it is -- exclusively from an analog fleet of Roland synths and phasers -- and guided along by Martin's winsome coo, Tick Tock Treasury is pretty damn one-dimensional. But he trusts his audience to suspend disbelief long enough to not miss guitars, drums, or any of the other trappings that normally define indie music. Once you make this leap, it's amazing how agreeable Tick Tock Treasury's saccharine glee becomes. It offers sweeping melodies complemented by gently persistent ones, and suggests early Magnetic Fields in the best way possible. Martin tends to resemble Elliott Smith vocally, but his concept-driven lyricism ...
