Featuring Brian Haas on piano, Reed Mathis on bass, and Jason Smart on drums, the band serves to create one distinct voice that speaks in a profound compositional and improvisational language. The album includes 13 tracks with a free bonus DVD!
This release includes a bonus DVD Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey: Reed Mathis (acoustic 12-string guitar, sitar, cello, bass instrument, double bass); Brian Haas (piano); Jason Smart (drums, percussion). The Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey is a rather fascinating trio. Reed Mathis is the main wild card, for he plays acoustic bass, octave pedal-induced bass (which sometimes sounds like a guitar), cello, 12-string guitar and sitar. Mathis is often in the lead (particularly when playing in the upper register), pianist Brian Haas is quite unpredictable (almost swinging in spots and then indulging in sound explorations), and drummer-percussionist Jason Smart is very alert to the other two musicians' spontaneous ideas. The music is avant-garde, but also crosses over into fusion and post-bop. There are times when one wishes the group would break into a groove but the episodic music does not find them settling into any one basic idea for long. In addition to the 13 selections on this CD (all originals), this set also comes with a four-song DVD ("Pacific"/"Walking With Giants"/"Slow Breath Silent Mind"/"There Is No Method"), music that was freely improvised on March 30 and 31, 2004 before an audience at Yoshi's in Oakland. The addition of the DVD makes this set a particularly good buy for listeners curious as to what the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey is about. ~ Scott Yanow Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey is a rather fascinating trio. (Dr. Del)Only Love - That's it, only love, just love, nothing but love, 16 tracks of love songs. If you are fed up with hearing about love and the power of loving the important people in your life, THEN DON'T LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM! On the other hand, if you have had a hard day and need to have your spirits lifted, then listen to this CD about TEN TIMES. "Only Love" is sixteen songs about the power of love, the warmth of love, the joy of love, the ecstasy of love, the newness of love, the healing of love, the endurance of love, and the beauty of love. After listening to these songs, you will feel so much better that your stomach may be queasy. Each song was written for someone in my life, most of them for my wife MaryAnn. I love her more than I can possibly express, but I tried very hard to come close with these lyrics. My guess is - you have a MaryAnn in your life, someone whom you love very much. It may be a lover, a spouse, a partner, a child, a grandchild, a friend. Then, I also wrote these songs for you. Listen, sing along, enjoy the love that you have and dream about the love yet to come.Lyrics make the message:"Dusty road sees our silent footsteps, hand in hand.Treasured moments of a captured time, I understand. How much I love you, how much I want you in my life.Lifting up my soaring spirit, in this dance." (Just Like Your Love) - or -"I’ve seen love in my lifetime.I’ve had joy in my life. Then I saw the magic of your beautyand what I’ve seen and what I’ve had, they just all came apart." (I Believe in Love) - or -"I waited for you and my wait seemed so long.I watched for you through days and days I stayed strong. With time so scarred I knew your love would right the wrongs." (I Love You) - or -"In a world of instant joy and instant pain, with change as the constant, nothing stays the same.Love is the casualty, it’s here and then it’s gone, but your love is the one to stay." (In the Long Run) Really now, I'm not kidding. This is "Only Love." Enjoy! Love to: ...
