The Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey is a rather fascinating trio. Reed Mathis is the main wild card, for he plays acoustic bass, octave pedal-induced bass (which sometimes sounds like a guitar), cello, 12-string guitar and sitar. Mathis is often in the lead (particularly when playing in the upper register), pianist Brian Haas is quite unpredictable (almost swinging in spots and then indulging in sound explorations), and drummer-percussionist Jason Smart is very alert to the other two musicians' spontaneous ideas. The music is avant-garde, but also crosses over into fusion and post-bop. There are times when one wishes the group would break into a groove but the episodic music does not find them settling into any one basic idea for long. In addition to the 13 selections on this CD (all originals), this set also comes with a four-song DVD ("Pacific"/"Walking With Giants"/"Slow Breath Silent Mind"/"There Is No Method"), music that was freely improvised on March 30 and 31, 2004 before an audience at Yoshi's in Oakland. The addition of the DVD makes this set a particularly good buy for listeners curious as to what the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey is about. ~ Scott Yanow

Featuring Brian Haas on piano, Reed Mathis on bass, and Jason Smart on drums, the band serves to create one distinct voice that speaks in a profound compositional and improvisational language. The album includes 13 tracks with a free bonus DVD!

Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey: Reed Mathis (acoustic 12-string guitar, sitar, cello, bass instrument, double bass); Brian Haas (piano); Jason Smart (drums, percussion). Walking With Giants Music Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey Walking With Giants Songs Walking With Giants Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) JFJO last CD + DVD This is an exellent CD with a bad video-wanderful sound DVD of this group (JFJO-piano,bass,drums).
All songs are written by bandmembers.
What you'll find weird is the bass sound.
Mathis, the bass player, performs often with an octave effects pedal that makes his bass sound like an electric guitar.
Haas, the piano player,is gifted and sometimes (you'll see in the DVD) plays a melodica.
5 stars for Jason Smart and his brush work.
Check them out, you'll be a fan.

Fredhead's Delight Open ears and open minds are wildly rewarded by this creative trio of virtuosos. The DVD is a wise inclusion, as you have to see these guys to believe what you're hearing. This is the type of stuff you feel good turning other people on to, so I bought four copies. Submitted by darrocd (Philadelphia, PA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Walking With Giants album
$6.05 PEACE BEYOND PASSION was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album.
On her second album, Me'Shell NdegeOcello continues to use a seamless blend of funk, jazz, rap and soul as a bed for her sociosexual observations. There's a spiritual bent, as well, to PEACE BEYOND PASSION, in songs that take on racism, homophobia and other societal ills. The centerpieces of the album are three songs named for books of the Bible: "Deuteronomy: Niggerman," "Ecclesiastes: Free My Heart" and "Leviticus: Faggot."
The music is less hip-hop-oriented than that on her debut, PLANTATION LULLABIES, and fleshed-out with heavier jazz nuances and '70s funk shadings. It's helped along in those directions by saxophonist Joshua Redman (he played on the debut, too) and one-time ...
