LAND OF THE SUN features music by three significant Mexican composers. Haden's group performs a song each by Agustin Lara ("Solamente Una Vez [You Belong to My Heart]") and Armando Manzanero ("Esta Tarde Vi Llover [Yesterday I Heard the Rain]"), but the remaining eight tracks are by Jose Sabre Marroquin (whose lyrical, delicate music seamlessly blends jazz with his country's folk traditions). Though understated percussion grooves occasionally accent a melody, the tunes, for the most part, are ballads and lullabies. Rubalcaba wrote the arrangements here, which prominently feature his own sensitive piano playing and Oriente Lopez's lilting flute ("Anoranza [Longing]" is a gorgeous example of their interplay). As appropriate to an afternoon siesta on a Mexico City veranda as it is for romantic dancing on a New York rooftop, LAND OF THE SUN is soothing, dream-like, and exquisitely made.
Those who know bassist Charlie Haden from his avant-garde work with the Liberation Music Orchestra and Ornette Coleman will be in for a shock here. LAND OF THE SUN bears little resemblance to the free, strident music Haden recorded in those groups. With the help of accomplished, intense musicians such as pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba and saxophonist Joe Lovano, Haden has made a record of astonishing consonance, serenity, and beauty.
Personnel: Charlie Haden (double bass); Larry Koonse, Lionel Loueke (guitar); Oriente Lopez (flute); Miguel Zenón (alto saxophone); Joe Lovano (tenor saxophone); Michael Rodriguez (trumpet, flugelhorn); Gonzalo Rubalcaba (piano, percussion); Ignacio Berroa (drums, percussion); Juan "Chocolate" DeLaCruz (bongos).
Down Beat (p.67) - 3 1/2 stars out of 5 - "LAND OF THE SUN has the feel of sky and perpetual quiet evenings..." JazzTimes (p.75) - "[A] study in muted, calming colors, silky-smooth tempos and cascades of pure melody." Charlie Haden Land Of The Sun Songs Land Of The Sun Review

Land Of The Sun album
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features ...
| | Brad Mehldau Live In Tokyo CD (2004)
Land Of The Sun CD music
$15.39 In the early 2000s, more and more jazz musicians began breaking away from the Great American Songbook. Rather than limiting themselves to the standard tunes from Tin Pan Alley and Broadway, jazz artists started to embrace pop music to a greater extent. Pianist Brad Mehldau was one of the most noted proponents of this shift.
On the 2004 solo outing, LIVE IN TOKYO, Mehldau further distances himself from the older pianistic traditions of Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, et al. This is evidenced by his choice of repertoire, which includes two songs by melancholy British folk icon Nick Drake ("Things Behind the Sun" and "River Man") and one by rock renegades Radiohead ...
| | Paul Motian I Have The Room Above Her CD (2005)
Land Of The Sun music CDs
$14.15 To put drummer Paul Motian, guitarist Bill Frisell, and saxophonist Joe Lovano in a room together is to court majesty and genius; even if the three were playing hackneyed standards half-asleep, the results would likely be brilliant. I HAVE THE ROOM ABOVE HER is filled with the kind of technical mastery and scintillating chemistry one would expect from a trio this accomplished and advanced. Frisell's electric guitar spins choral color and spiraling, reverbed embellishments. Lovano's tenor is full-toned, and he plays with tremendous sensitivity and nuance, often holding down the melodic center while Frisell and Motian create rhythmic and harmonic frames.
The delicate imbrication of parts lends these compositions the feel of fragile, shifting houses suspended in ...
| | Dave Holland Overtime CD (2005)
Land Of The Sun songs
$13.49 This exceptional date by Dave Holland Big Band was recorded in 2002 in New York, yet remained unreleased until 2005. As is to be expected, Holland assembled a fine cast of seasoned and young players, some of whom are veterans of Holland's quintets and quartets. These are four saxophones -- two alto, tenor and baritone -- three trumpets and trombones, and vibes as well as bass and drums. They include Chris Potter and Robin and Duane Eubanks, Antonio Hart, Steve Nelson, Josh Roseman, Billy Kilson, Taylor Haskins, Gary Smulyan, Jonathan Arons and Alex Sipiagin. The music centers around the opening four-part "Monterey Suite," a tour de force commissioned by the Monterey Jazz Festival and originally performed there in 2001. Holland's writing for the trombone section is dynamite. Roseman, Arons, and Robin Eubanks offer up solid bottom rung lines and tight timing as anchors for the rest of the brass though they often charge out front. Potter once more displays his talents as not only a fine soloist but as an excellent ...
| | Charlie Haden Not In Our Name CD (2005)
Land Of The Sun album
$15.35 Pianist Carla Bley is the only returning member of the original LMO. As before, she proves to be a triple threat with her dexterous playing, intuitive conducting, and inventive arrangements. Haden, of course, anchors these tunes (which include his own eclectic title track and a soulful rendition of "Amazing Grace") with his formidable--though never flashy--bass work, allowing the other musicians, particularly guitarist Steve Cardenas and trombonist Curtis Fowlkes, to shine. This is big-band music that can shift with ease from avant-garde passages to swinging melodies, and the talent on hand adds weight to the underlying messages. Although it's difficult to express political outrage with jazz instrumentals, the LMO does exactly that on NOT IN OUR NAME, conveying discontent, sadness, and even hope with a potent, masterful ...
