Street Novelist album
$14.35 Minus some high-profile guest spots on other rappers' albums, Yukmouth has made little impression outside of rap's hardcore inner circle since his days with the Luniz. With the guest stars often overtaking the man and an overstuffed track list, United Ghettos of America, Vol. 2 isn't going to change that much, but the hardcore get a better album than usual and it's a shame some of these tracks won't even make it to radio. "We Just Wanna Thug" is bright electro with a great N.O.R.E. appearance, E-40 and Yuk nail it on "Kalifornia G'z," "I Love Dro" is a worthy smoking song, and the cinematic "American Me" is just about the most exciting moment Yukmouth has served up by his lonesome. Chalk it all up to the guest stars. Not that their raps are better; it's just that Yukmouth seems more inspired when he's bouncing his skills off others (been that way since the Luniz). Also of note is the presence of Mike Dean, the producer/engineer who has been behind a bunch of great rap albums from the South and Texas. He's mastered the ...
| | Jacka Jack Artist CD (2005)
Street Novelist CD music
$13.15 Enter the Jacka. The death of 2Pac in the mid 90's ripped the heart out of West Coast Hip Hop. At the same time a young street poet named the Jacka was honing his skills in the Bay Area Rap game. Always open minded, he was influenced by b-boys and thugs, pimps and Imams. The Jacka has since developed into an established, well-rounded, well-versed emcee in the right place to bring the West Coast some serious attention. The Jacka's music is a reflection of his life. He witnessed the birth of the dope game and the drug war that followed, as the battle was waged in his community, on his block, and in his house. Memories of departed loved ones haunt his mind and soul. His release is to share his experiences through his music. Reality hurts. Rap is the Jacka's medicine. That and some purple. Jacka's success proves his mettle ...

| | Public Enemy There's A Poison Goin' On... CD (1999)
Street Novelist music CDs
$9.79 After more than a decade as one of hip-hop's most pioneering and successful rap acts, Public Enemy forged new ground once again in the music business with 1999's THERE'S A POISON GOIN' ON. The album was one of the first feature releases available exclusively on the internet and is PE's loudest, most forceful record in years. Though the album does contain the radio-friendly "Do You Wanna Go Our Way," Public Enemy proves that it hasn't lost its vitriol with tracks like "Crash," "Last Mass of the Caballeros," and "LSD."
Flavor-Flav is back in full jokster mode on such tracks as "41:19" and "What What." And of course, what's a PE album without controversy? "Swindler's Lust," in which Chuck D criticizes greed-driven record companies, has drawn considerable fire. For what it's worth, Chuck D and Public Enemy are as relevant today as they were when they first appeared on the hip-hop scene.
Opening with a sonic collage straight out of Fear of a Black Planet, There's a Poison Goin' On. . . comes out of the gates sounding like classic Public Enemy, which is exactly what Public Enemy intended, since their slight sonic change-up on He Got Game didn't result in a hit. In a way, PE's feud with Def Jam over downloadable MP3 music was a good thing, since it brought them media attention, which is rare for a veteran hip-hop band. Such increased exposure also brought a minor controversy over "Swindlers Lust," which some perceived as anti-Semitic, but this outrage was isolated because Public Enemy was now at the margins of hip-hop. They were no longer considered cutting-edge, and younger kids never picked up their records, so the only place for this controversy to reside was among the rock critics and aging fans who remembered when It Takes a Nation of Millions changed the world ten years prior. ...
