(10 Customer Reviews)
Papa Roach's 2002 effort, LOVEHATETRAGEDY, didn't quite live up to the success of its major-label predecessor, but the importance of this outing was the band's decision to go beyond its rap-rock origins. GETTING AWAY WITH MURDER showcases the quartet's further creative growth, as the playing and writing have only gotten more potent. Frontman Jacoby Shaddix continues to impress as a vocalist who's gone from shouting his thoughts to conveying more sophisticated subject matter. The biggest difference can be seen in Shaddix's shift from contemplating his dead dog on the last album to here ranting about a deceptive government motivated by greed and power ("Tyranny of Normality"). Just as effective is the anthemic "Blanket of Fear," with its strident denouncement of overwhelming paranoia in an age of war and terrorism. Throughout it all, guitarist Jerry Horton lays down brontosaurus-sized riffs that prove that Papa Roach still has plenty of aggression to fuel its brand of nu-metal.

Getting Away With Murder
$10.39 Includes liner notes by Peter Mensch, Joe Elliott, Phil Collen and Rick Savage.
When Def Leppard arrived on American shores with 1980's ON THROUGH THE NIGHT, they were lumped with a New Wave of British Heavy Metal that also counted Iron Maiden part of the movement. Yet even then, the Sheffield quintet's inescapable pop sense separated them from their heavier brethren. As the '80's progressed, Def Lep soldiered on through tragedy, lengthy multi-year stays in the studio and quite a few world tours. VAULT culls the hits from the millions of albums they sold by way of MTV ("Photograph"), soundtracks ("Two Steps Behind"), and obvious sexual innuendo ("Pour Some Sugar On Me").

In the world of emo and pop-punk, 2003 not only found Blink 182 qualifying for the early bird special, but the creators of a self-titled outing that represents a big step in musical maturity for a band best known for serial nudity and a jokey, skate-punk attitude. Rest assured, this trio hasn't lost its taste for serious riffing and catchy-as-all-get-out harmonies, as evidenced by the thumping "Go," the jittery "Stockholm Syndrome," and the anthemic "Easy Target."

| | U2 How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb CD (2004)
Getting Away With Murder
$10.45 Much in the manner of their previous album, ALL THAT YOU CAN'T LEAVE BEHIND, U2 largely strips down the stadium-sized approach of years past on the provocatively titled HOW TO DISMANTLE AN ATOMIC BOMB. Whether they were inspired by the garage-rock revival that took place in between the two records, or just felt like making some visceral rock & roll, this 2004 release has as much unbridled energy as such early U2 benchmarks as BOY or WAR. The album starts with a bang, courtesy of the charging, angular "Vertigo," whose driving bass line and shouted vocals announce the band's intentions in no uncertain terms.
