When a singer/songwriter fights the big record label -- in this case Dreamworks -- because it doesn't understand the artist's vision, then the artist buys his way out of a contract so he can go somewhere that cares, it's admirable and has a "this must be good stuff" allure for sure. Give one listen to The Clarence Greenwood Recordings and you might have a guess at why Dreamworks "mishandled" Citizen Cope. Ponderous, unfinished, and pointless when it's at its worst, the album Citizen Cope -- singer/songwriter Clarence Greenwood's alias -- fought so hard for is filled with metaphors and characters that are murky. Nothing in the surrounding context suggests you should try to figure them out either. A lost soul who falls in love with a billboard is the subject of "Pablo Picasso," but there's no insight, no pathos, and no point. It's sad when anyone mistakes inanimate objects for someone who loves them, but Citizen Cope's use of the character is so detached it borders on exploitive. The timely "people wanna bomb us" number, "Bullet and a Target," is the album's centerpiece and single, but it's just another shock-value laundry list of depressing situations -- Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire" for the Dave Matthews generation. It also has one of those horrible Parental Advisory sticker-dodging moments that kept rearing its ugly head in 2004. The "father" in the story -- another faceless character who doesn't get fleshed out -- just doesn't give a F word, which is removed, leaving an audible blank space that the lyric sheet claims should've been filled with the word "enough." Turns out the devil you don't know (Arista in this case) might be as bad as the devil you do know (Dreamworks) and that the music artists rescue from big business isn't always worth hearing. ~ David Jeffries
When a singer/songwriter fights the big record label -- in this case Dreamworks -- because the label doesn't understand the artist's vision, then buys back a record so he can find someone else who cares enough to release it, it's admirable and has a "this must be good" allure for sure. One listen to The Clarence Greenwood Recordings and you might have a guess at why Dreamworks said "no." It's a wandering album, one that Greenwood's fan base can connect with, but more difficult for everyone else. The timely "people wanna bomb us" number, "Bullet and a Target," is the album's centerpiece single; it presents a shock-value laundry list of depressing situations, Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire" for the Dave Matthews generation. Elsewhere a vagrant falls in deep love with a billboard and D'Artagnan meets his match. From there it gets more undecipherable, but it's a record he fought hard for and his fans will love trying to figure it all out. ~ David Jeffries

Citizen Cope Clarence Greenwood Recordings Songs Clarence Greenwood Recordings Music Clarence Greenwood Recordings Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews I can't get enough of this amazing man. What an amazing sound!!! I can't explain it in any words at all, you just have to listen for yourself. Clarence has such a sexy, sultry voice mixed with the melodic sounds of reggae,"moog", folk, a definite sound that stands on it's own and is way over due in the music world. His sound is so unique, honestly, I play all 3 of his CD's over and over every day and NEVER get tired of ANY ONE of his song's. Citizen Cope is definitely "Copasetic"

Much Needed New Sound On The Scene Citizen Cope is the hottest new group in music today. The CG Recordings is a collection of great sounds that is sure to reach many music lovers. From Reggae to Rock, Pop to Folk, Rap to Blues, Citizen Cope's got it all. Not to mention a smokin' solo by Santana on the track "Son's Gonna Rise". This is the new sound I've been waiting for. They also have a self-titled album which is a great compliment to the CG Recordings. Submitted by jjerome514 (Pittsburgh, PA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
"Real" music with incredible, emotional connection From front to back, this album takes you along life's journey with charismatic melodies and poetic lyrics. Every song is sincere and touches the core of human emotions. The funky beats keep you moving accompanied by thought-provoking words. This album combines rock, folk, funk and soul making it difficult to narrow down to a certain genre. Any music listener can appreciate what the Clarence Greenwood Recordings has to offer...a genuine experience. Submitted by jlh5f (Franklin, TN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$228.75 When the Everly Brothers left Cadence Records for Warner Brothers in 1960, they were the biggest rock & roll act in America, with the notable exception of Elvis Presley, who had just been drafted into the Army. The Everlys were survivors, withstanding shifting cultural tides and deftly sidestepping the pitfalls that befell their peers, avoiding jail and scandal when many of their peers couldn't seem to avoid it. But the duo wasn't successful merely because they kept their noses clean, but because their music had a broad appeal. Rooted in country, the Everlys could dip into their roots when necessary, clean up for a pop audience, while -- as the virtual inventors of the power chord -- rocking & rolling like nobody's business. This, combined with a lavish production that came with a major label, made for a set of recordings that were more varied and less consistent than their Cadence work, but their earliest sides for Warner were frequently compelling and always fascinating, as Bear Family's massive, seven-disc set The Price of Fame 1960-1965 shows.
Like many Bear Family sets, the listenability of The Price of Fame suffers somewhat by the chronological inclusion of alternate takes and session outtakes, a practice that can sometimes be interesting -- hearing the Brothers run through various tempos of "Burma Shave" or turn "Little Hollywood Girl" inside out is fascinating ...
