This is part of Blue Note Records "Rudy Van Gelder Editions" series.
This album's title and cover welcome the listener to trumpeter Freddie Hubbard's initial outing as a bandleader, and it's a fine Blue Note debut. (Prior to this release, Hubbard had played with many East Coast jazz luminaries, most notably Sonny Rollins and Eric Dolphy.) Recorded in 1960, OPEN SESAME features a stellar band that includes pianist McCoy Tyner and saxophonist Tina Brooks.
The swinging title track, penned by Brooks, showcases the horns, but it also allows the rest of the band to get into a tight groove. The following tune finds the ensemble easing into Jimmy Van Heusen and Johnny Burke's classic ballad "But Beautiful," with Hubbard and Tyner taking center stage for much of the song. An outstanding first album, OPEN SESAME stands up to Hubbard's excellent latter-day recordings.

Open Sesame CD music
$12.99 STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish folk music, bossa nova, and other Latin jazz all come together in a seamless meld of tunes that accent the symmetry of ensemble play as much as they do an extremely advanced sense of ensemble harmonics, rhythmic invention, and, of course, tautly arranged spaces for individual improvisation--check out the album's longest cut, "Tagriel," for evidence as Zorn's composition not only travels genres but centuries. The popping showcase for solos that is "Serakel" is nonetheless a grooving post-bop tune with a joyous klezmer lyric line. The sheer shimmering beauty of "Psisya," which ...

Open Sesame music CDs
$12.65 Detroit-Born Singer/Songwriter Meshun cultured his smooth blend of r&b, funk-soul vocals by coveting some of the music industry's best. Fusing the consciousness of Marvin Gaye, the sensuality of Sade, and the nostalgia of neo-soul pioneer D'Angelo, Meshun offers an eclectic mix on his debut musical release, "Timing is Everything."Meshun began his career at age eight singing in church choirs. He Formed his first singing group, Basic, at age 14, then soon after, opened for pop singer Aaliyah.Over the years he's continued to hone his writing skills, penning songs for several up and coming artists including R&B female group Nia and their Single "Not The One", Tamyra Gray of American Idol and Dani Stevenson, the female voice behind Nelly's summer hit, "Hot in Herre," whose anticipated debut is scheduled for release soon . Tunes from "Timing" have also been featured on the daytime soap opera, The Young and the Restless. In addition to singing and songwriting, he and producer, Todd Davis, have a publishing company, ToddMeshun Muzic, and label, Vibe Easy Ent. They aim to provide an outlet for independent artists who reject the recycled formulas for mainstream success, and create music in their own innovative style. Meshun looks for prosody in his music, a marriage between the melody and the words. "A song should tell a story," he says. "In the good ones, you can close your eyes and ...

| | Margie Balter Music From My Heart CD (2007)
Open Sesame album
$10.15 More than simply another brilliant composer and piano performer, Margie Balter has been making sweet music with some of Hollywood's biggest names for nearly two decades as "Piano Teacher to the Stars." Launching this side of her multifaceted career by coaching Holly Hunter for her Oscar-winning role in The Piano, the versatile musician, composer, songwriter, and artist has worked with Tom Cruise (on piano and harpsichord for Interview with the Vampire), Sandra Bullock (The Net), Scarlett Johansson (The Man Who Wasn't There), Sanaa Lathan (Disappearing Acts), Barbara Hershey (Portrait of a Lady), Kevin Spacey (Beyond the Sea), and Jack Black (The Holiday). In the 2005 Beauty Shop starring Queen Latifah, Balter had an incredible six individual credits. Besides teaching Djimon Hounsou and young Paige Hurd to play, her original composition "Finding My Wings" was featured during a key recital scene as the end segment of a medley where Hurd segues from Chopin to John Coltrane's "Giant Steps" and into a more modern performing style. This special piece designed to chronicle the metamorphosis of Hurd's character, Vanessa, was the spark that led Balter to fulfill her own lifelong dream to release her first solo piano CD -- and indeed, Music from My Heart is beautifully played, melodic, often bluesy and jazzy, and rhythmic. Her classical influences also ensure a depth that many new age-oriented solo piano projects lack. The recording is both a celebration of some of the compositional highlights of Balter's career and a showcase for some of her colorful new material. Among the highlights are "Little M" and "Miles & Mefa," two pieces from her 1998 film score debut, Light Speed; the opening track, "First Baywatch," which she wrote with her friend Cathy Wyatt for one of her students, a lifeguard/producer who conceived Baywatch; "Whisper in the Dark," which Balter wrote for her star-studded 1993 piano recital the same year The Piano came out; "Bluesie," composed for Beauty Shop as a segue from French composer Erik Satie to blues; and "For Thee a Small Wall-tz," originally written in her college years. Balter's newer original pieces include the African-influenced "Zanzi" and the haunting yet wistful "Crystal Dream." ~ Jonathan Widran
