This 1995 Bob James outing features seven tracks by the smooth-jazz performer.
Bob James was far from predictable in the 1990s, when his albums ranged from the embarrassing Playin' Hooky to the excellent Straight Up (an unexpected return to straight-ahead jazz) and the enjoyable pop-jazz offering Grand Piano Canyon. Drawing on pop, jazz and new age, The Swan is a bit lightweight...on the whole, but does have its moments. The CD's most substantial tunes include "Prospero" and "Ensenada Madness," which has a Spanish flavor and shows an awareness of the writing that Chick Corea did with Return To Forever... ~ Alex Henderson
Bob James was far from predictable in the '90s, when his albums ranged from the embarrassing Playin' Hooky to the excellent Straight Up (an unexpected return to straight-ahead jazz) and the enjoyable pop-jazz offering Grand Piano Canyon. Drawing on pop, jazz and new age, The Swan is lightweight and sleep-inducing on the whole, but it does have its moments. The CD's most substantial tunes include "Prospero" and "Ensenada Madness," which has a Spanish flavor and shows an awareness of the writing that Chick Corea did with Return to Forever. Unfortunately, too many of the other songs end up sounding like bloodless Muzak. Despite having a few bright spots, The Swan really isn't worth the price of admission. ~ Alex Henderson

Swan album
$6.25 With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz.
Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord changes. But KIND OF BLUE was to prove the most influential, enduring work of its kind. There was just such a vibe about these 1959 sessions--Miles' lyric genius and burgeoning stardom, the innovative voicings and rarefied touch of pianist Bill Evans, the electrifying presence of Coltrane and Cannonball--that some thirty-plus years after its initial release, KIND OF BLUE is still recognized as Davis' point of departure towards jazz's less-explored regions.
Bill Evans' translucent chords and Paul Chambers' ...
| | Kenny G Miracles: The Holiday Album CD (1994)
Swan CD music
$6.05 "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.
Over the past decade, since first gaining popularity with the Jeff Lorber Fusion, soprano saxophonist Kenny G has become one of the most celebrated instrumental stars in all of popular music. By fusing elements of contemporary jazz with the most lyrical aspects of pop and R&B, Kenny G has created an enduring sound signature and a fan base that rivals that of any vocalist.
It is precisely these lyric, vocal gifts that make Kenny G's sound so instantly identifiable. And on MIRACLES: THE HOLIDAY ALBUM, the saxophonist has turned his attention towards some of the most enduring, engaging melodies in popular music. Inspired in part by the birth of his son, the album has a mellifluous melodic quality, a reassuring warmth, that transcends the holiday season.
Part of the credit must go to composer-arranger Walter Afanasieff, who has wielded his production skills for some of the biggest names in the business. Afanasieff proves himself ...

| | Michael Buble It's Time CD (2005)
Swan album
$10.05 Michael Buble's third major US release (including the mostly live COME FLY WITH ME) stays on message--this young Canadian loves the lush, swaying music of his parents' and grandparents' generations. Buble's albums, however, are much more than mere back-in-the-day exercises. The production and arranging of David Foster (Celine Dion, Josh Groban) is eclectic in a way that firmly places the tunes at the dawn of the 21st century, and, more importantly, Buble possesses the chops and sense of style to re-imagine the adult-contemporary vocal genre in a distinctive manner. In addition to standards by Gershwin and Porter, Buble embraces a variety of sounds, from Motown ("How Sweet It Is") to bossa nova ("Quando, Quando, Quando" with Nelly Furtado) to the Beatles ("Can't Buy Me Love" with a "She Loves You" tag). With his smooth croon and charming persona, Buble is a natural performer, and, for fans of fearlessly romantic and infectiously swinging music, IT'S TIME is a sure bet.

| | Melody Gardot My One And Only Thrill CD (2009)
Swan CD music
$12.05 Although the plaudits for Melody Gardot's debut album, WORRISOME HEART, were entirely justified, it sometimes seemed as if the young singer-songwriter's compelling personal story--hit by a car and severely injured at the age of 19, the aspiring fashion designer began playing piano and writing songs as part of her physical therapy--overshadowed her music. Gardot's ...
| | Scott Wendholt Through The Shadows CD (1994)
Swan music CDs
$14.65 On trumpeter Scott Wendholt's second recording as a leader he has gathered together a group of his better-known peers -- tenor saxophonist Don Braden, pianist Bruce Barth, bassist Ira Coleman, and drummer Billy Drummond -- to perform five post-bop originals, two jazz classics, and one standard. In addition to proving himself an under-recognized talent on his chosen instrument, Wendholt displays promise as a composer, having written some challenging material for this recording. The title track begins as a ballad with the melody played by Braden on flute and Wendholt on muted trumpet that, after a brief drum interlude, begins a new melody played by trumpet and tenor sax over a driving Afro-Latin groove. "Hour of the Pearl" opens with a piano intro that segues into a relaxed swinger, while "Kaleidoscope" is a burning blues with a lightning-quick melody. Other favorites include a swinging version of Sam Rivers' "Beatrice" that features Wendholt's muted trumpet and a up-tempo, pianoless version of the standard "Just in Time." Drummond's drumset versatility stands out throughout this recording, showing why he is one of the busiest ...
| | Escapade Citrus Cloud Cover CDs (1998)
Swan songs
$17.75 Citrus Cloud Cover brought Escapade attention from outside of their local East Coast. This double album from 1998 got very positive reviews, usually for the right reasons. Recorded for the most part in the studio over the course of 14 months, it features a strong selection of space rock-based group improvisations. The music tends to be more jam-oriented, even ambient and slightly free-form, than what you'd expect from a space rock outfit. Insistent pulses and sweeping, flying-saucer-like synthesizers are rare and uncharacteristic. Instead, Escapade relies on strong listening skills and gradual transformations. On the other hand, it lacks some pathos and extremes -- not to say the music is cold or emotionless, but even in its harder-rocking passages it still feels self-aware and restrained. Disc two is far superior in quality, mostly thanks to two outstanding improvisations: "Turtle Chase" (17 minutes) and "The Sunlight. It Hurts My Eyes" (31 minutes). In the latter, Paul Hilzinger, John Ortega, Joey Murphy, ...
