Recorded at Bradley's Barn, Mt. Juliet, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Owen Bradley. On her first two albums, k.d. lang took a witty and playful approach to the sounds and traditions of classic country music, and while it was obvious she truly loved the music, she also seemed to be having a bit of fun at its expense at the same time. But in 1988, lang proved beyond a doubt that she was serious about country (as well as her own talent) with Shadowland, an homage to the polished countrypolitan sounds of the 1950s and '60s that was produced by Owen Bradley, the iconic Nashville producer who was behind the controls for many of Patsy Cline's most memorable recordings. lang herself sought out Bradley to work on the album, and luring him out of retirement proved to be a masterstroke; rather than try to re-create the lush textures and deep atmosphere of Bradley's sides for Cline or Brenda Lee herself, lang went to the source, and Bradley gave her studio settings that referenced his work during Nashville's golden era while adding an ever-so-slight contemporary sheen. Bradley also brought aboard an all-star crew of legendary Nashville studio hands and invited Loretta Lynn, Brenda Lee, and Kitty Wells to sing with lang on the closing "Honky Tonk Angels' Medley." In the hands of many artists, this sort ...
| | Primal Scream Evil Heat CD (2002) Bonus Tracks; Japan
Surf City/Dead Man's Curve
$36.09 Japanese edition of 2002 album includes one Japanese only bonus track, 'Substance D'.
Initial pressings included a bonus DVD. Primal Scream: Bobby Gillespie, Robert Young, Gary Mounfield, Martin Duffy, Andrew Innes, Darrin Mooney. Additional personnel includes: Kate Moss (vocals); Robert Plant (harmonica). Producers: Kevin Shields, Two Lone Swordsmen, Jagz Kooner. The Japanese edition includes one additional track. It was pretty hard to guess what Primal Scream would do with a follow-up to their bombastic 2000 release, XTRMNTR. That record broke all kinds of ground for a group that had consistently shifted with popular culture since their Madchester/acid house success of Screamadelica. XTRMNTR offered up a maddening scope of aggressive beats and screaming politics that the group had not previously tackled. Jarring and off-putting at times (albeit a stroke of brilliance), the record is a tad difficult to sit all the way through. Evil Heat seems to attempt to bridge together the two worlds of their past club psychedelia and the blastings of XTRMNTR. In all, they succeed: there's some pounding and grinding for the club, and then some all-out cries and rockers to fill out the set. However, at times the dance stuff hits a lull, and they don't really take it anywhere. Such is the case with "Autobahn 66." Sure, club music is at times seemingly unchanging, but Primal Scream can take it to other places (and they have in the past). The transcendental moves of Vanishing Point or the spiritual grooves apparent on Screamadelica had taken surface repetition and opened ...
