Over a handful of decades, NRBQ has become one of the most popular cult bands in America, thanks to its airtight chemistry, superb musicianship, willingness to bend stylistic boundaries, and--most importantly--its sense of fun and adventure. None of these qualities go missing on 2004's DUMMY. In fact, the songs on DUMMY are so fresh, quirky, and full of youthful verve that the uninitiated would be hard pressed to guess that founding members Joey Spampinato (bass/vocals), and Terry Adams (keyboards/vocals) have been playing together since the late 1960s.
There is plenty of evidence of the R&B vibe that has always been the group's backbone, especially on "I Need Love," which rides a chugging groove, and the ironic, early-1960s-inspired rocker "Hey Punkin Head." But, as per usual, NRBQ throws out lots of curveballs, among them a cover of the Brazilian classic "All That's Left to Say Is Goodbye," joke songs ("Do the Primal Thing"), and surprisingly moving ballads ("What You Mean to Me"). Add to these social critiques of media ("Dummy"), war ("Misguided Missiles") and unimpeded development ("One Big Parking Lot"), and DUMMY amounts to proof positive that NRBQ has lost none of its juice.
