The breakout solo sensation from Australian pop group S Club 7, Rachel Stevens proves her potential as a younger, hipper Kylie Minogue on this debut album, FUNKY DORY.
The debut solo album by Rachel Stevens had all the ingredients to be a massive-selling album, but somehow it just didn't quite happen, despite being re-released on several occasions with tracks added on as singles became hits. Stevens was formerly a member of the multi-million-selling band S Club 7, who were always on television, both in their own reality TV show and on every pop program it was possible to appear on. However, after Stevens' promising start as the first solo member of S Club 7 to release new product after the demise of the band (having signed a solo contract with manager Simon Fuller and taking the single "Sweet Dreams My L.A. Ex" to number two), the album failed to live up to expectations, and soon found itself plummeting down the charts and into the bargain bins. The opening track from Funky Dory was indeed "Sweet Dreams My L.A. Ex," a Spanish-style acoustic number written by Cathy Dennis and produced by the team of Bloodshy & Avant, and the track also closed the album in an eight-minute version remixed by Bimbo Jones. But between the two versions, Stevens could be heard moving away from the pure pop and good-time fun that epitomized S Club 7 between 1999 and 2002 and into a more R&B-influenced sound, already crowded by acts such as TLC and the Sugababes. The pace dropped to a ballad for just one track, "Heaven Has to Wait," which had all the makings of a good song, except there wasn't really a tune to speak of. In an attempt to appeal to a more adult audience, most of the rest of the tracks were midtempo songs, like "Silk" and "Blue Afternoon," the type of material that S Club 7 had never attempted before. Funky Dory album
$42.85 This is the Japanese import edition of Dannii Minogue's NEON NIGHTS featuring 16 tracks including two bonus recordings.
There's something about those Minogue sisters. No matter how many times they seem to be down for the count, a surprise comeback hit is always just around the corner. Dannii has never quite achieved the level of superstardom that sister Kylie has attained, but she has shown equal tenacity. Released in 1997, Girl may have been a commercial failure, but it succeeded in repositioning her as a sophisticated club artist rather than a B-list pop singer. That album caught on in the burgeoning trance scene of the mid-'90s, and Neon Nights partially follows that trend into the 2000s on tracks such as "Who Do You Love Now?," the out-of-nowhere comeback collaboration with Riva that gave Dannii the biggest hit of her career. However, Neon Nights is a more varied collection, a veritable ...

Funky Dory songs
$17.89 This is a hot CD consisting of 30 songs by female rock & rollers, only one of whom -- Jackie DeShannon -- is going to leap out in terms of name recognition. Strangely enough, this disc is more consistent musically than a lot of Buffalo Bop's other releases. They held back on this until the label had 30 consistently solid songs to put together, and the result is a good-time, fast-paced rock & roll collection by the fairer -- but not a bit less lusty -- sex. Sheree Scott does a convincing and intimidating job on "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On," and Linda Glover's slightly cracking voice sparks a lively rendition of "Counting Sheep Over You," fronting a good rockabilly band whose only flaw is an ever-so-slightly, too-classy chorus behind her raspy enthusiasm. Mona Lunsford is a bluesy, slurring singer whose dissolute demeanor on "I'm Getting Restless" makes it one the most delightfully decadent pieces of hard-country style rockabilly ever heard from a woman. Judy Tolbert's "I'm Wise to You Now" is hard White country-blues, sung in a heavily accented rural style, while "Rockin' the Blues" by Peggi Griffin is high-energy ...

Funky Dory music CDs
$14.59 On the initial pressings of the Uncle Devil Show's debut A Terrible Beauty, there was a sticker attached to the cover, informing all curious consumers that this is the "new project from Del Amitri vocalist/frontman Justin Currie!" This is needed, since Currie and his colleagues -- singer/songwriter Kevin McDermott and Simple Minds drummer Jim McDermott -- all take pseudonyms for this trio, all for no discernible purpose. That is, there's no purpose unless the alter egos allow all the three to indulge in a spot of adolescent wish fulfillment, an aural midlife crisis where the trio returns to ...
