Peter Van Huffel - Mind Over MatterMind Over Matter is the debut CD release from alto and soprano saxophonist Peter Van Huffel. The CD features eight original compositions by Peter that truly portray a new and original voice in the world of jazz. The ensemble featured on the album is comprised of five of the top young jazz musicians emerging through the Toronto jazz scene, all of whom are quickly gaining recognition throughout Canada, the United States and Europe. Five of the eight tracks feature the complete quintet, while the other three are downsized to a quartet, one a "chordless" quartet without pianist Greg de Denus. The other musicians featured on the album include Chuck McClelland on tenor saxophone, Brandi Disterheft on bass, and drummer Joe Sorbara. The featured compositions range from the groovy Hexed, a composition in 12/8 which features the two saxophonists as well as an exciting drum solo by Sorbara, to the beautiful 5/4 ballad Simple, to the very free and experimental composition Dialing In which begins with a freely improvised saxophone duet. PETER VAN HUFFELAlto & Soprano SaxophonistOriginally from Kingston, Ontario, Canada, Peter Van Huffel began playing the saxophone at age thirteen. After years of studying in Kingston and Montreal, Peter moved to Toronto to attend the Jazz Performance program at Humber College. There Peter studied privately with acclaimed saxophonist Pat LaBarbera, as well as with Don Thompson, Brian Dickinson, Mark Promane and Ted Quinlan.
