(10 Customer Reviews)
In 20-plus years together, Rush has rarely varied from its basic formula--two parts musical chops, one part lyrical smarts, and one more part musical chops. This power trio knows its strengths. Drummer Neil Peart writes intelligent lyrics here about global subjects ranging from the Internet ("Virtuality") to comparative religion ("Totem"). But it keeps coming back to the trio's musical interplay, and Rush's ever-ready willingness to experiment with it. Alex Lifeson adds a nice touch to "Half The World" with a mandola, while Geddy Lee's synthesizer flourishes and off-kilter rhythm on "Time And Motion" are vintage Rush.
The most exciting demonstration of Rush's group synchronicity is on the instrumental "Limbo." It starts with the sounds of clinking chains and a bubbling cauldron, before charging forward--occasionally soaring--on waves of guitar, synth and disembodied voices (including a sample from "The Monster Mash"). This is the sound of an intellectual band smart enough not to take itself too seriously.
Recorded at Bearsville Studios, Bearsville, New York and Reaction Studios, Toronto, Canada from January to March 1996.
Rush: Geddy Lee (vocals, synthesizer, bass guitar); Alex Lifeson (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, mandola); Neil Peart (hammer dulcimer, drums, cymbals).

Entertainment Weekly (10/04/96, p.62) - "...by clearly out-funking the likes of Yes and ELP, Rush prove, at long last, that art rock needn't be lethal." - Rating: B Mojo (Publisher) (p.122) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[The album] witnessed the re-birth of Rush as a hard rock band....There's a warmth here that had long been missing from Rush's work." Good!! But not the best!! Test for Echo was the last good album made by Rush!!. It was my first purchase with CD Universe, and I'm very happy, because it takes only 14 days to arrive for me. ( Sorry for my bad English ). Submitted by p.m.araujo (Itapetininga - São Paulo - Brasil) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
What Progressive Rock is About!!!! The album rocks. I'm a huge Rusher, and this was my last album to buy. What you will experience from the songs will take you to another world. Just by hearing the song "Test For Echo," and being on top of the Colorado Rocky Mountains really gives you "many things you can think about. When you look far away." I have a lot to say about this album, but for now, I will just say this.....THE ALBUM IS UNDERRATED! This album is gold, I can't see why people hate it. We all know it isn't one of Rush's old masterpieces, but for me, I make this album the best Rush album of the 90's. Followed by Roll the Bones, and Counterparts. Rush forever everyone! It's My Turn To Drive!!!!!! I agree with David not garbage to me eighter! This may not be Rush at their best, but it's pure rock and roll(Something we don't get much of these days). If you look at all the other CRAP that is so called music that came out in 1996 this one is one of the best, by the best. Rush is a band that will live on forever. Once a fan always a fan, that's what I think about it. Half the world are Rush fans, While the other half just don't get it!!!! Submitted by John T. (Kentucky, U.S.A.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
NOT GARGABE TO ME!!!!!!!!! I'm a TRUE fan. I keep an open mind to all of Rush's material. Test for echo may not be like their old stuff, but hey, you have to change with the times a little bit!!!! If every album sounded the same they would be boring. This album went gold in no time when it was released in 1996. I'm sure its multi platinum by now. "Half the world" gets alot of radio play where I'm from. I just cant stand these so called fans that turn their backs on a band if the band makes an album that they dont like. Keep on smiling Rush, all the way to the bank!!!!! because good music always sells. Submitted by David (Tennessee, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Recorded live at Leeds University, Leeds, England on February 14, 1970. Originally released on Decca (79175) in May 1970.
In addition to making some of the finest studio albums in rock history (ranging in approach from proto-pop-punk to the first rock operas), the Who, live, epitomized the brash, electrifying energy that put a new face on the music in the 1960s. The original LIVE AT LEEDS album, released in 1970, looked straight into the eye of this hurricane on a single disc featuring six tracks. A 1995 reissue doubled the number of songs. The DELUXE EDITION, however, released in 2001, is the first document to feature the Leeds concert in its entirety. Spread out over two discs, this most recent update is definitive, and includes a 28-page booklet, sections of band-audience banter, and--most importantly--a full performance of TOMMY. The sound, enhanced here in a new mix supervised by guitarist/songwriter Pete Townshend, is crystalline, without losing any of the group's swirling chaos and bone-crushing sonic impact. Though the Who later began to abridge TOMMY live, disc two features the entire opera, while the first disc houses "Substitute," "My Generation," and a blood-pumping cover of "Summertime Blues," among other singles. For any Who fan, this edition is essential.
On the surface, the Who's LIVE AT LEEDS seems like it should be nothing more than a stopgap recording. Released a year after TOMMY, as guitarist/songwriter Pete Townshend was getting bogged down in the abortive LIFEHOUSE concept, LIVE AT LEEDS is simply the (mostly) non-TOMMY portion of the Who's standard live set of ...
