Say The Word music CDs
$8.49 Unquestionably Stryper's strongest and most rockin' album, To Hell with the Devil was a tough act to follow. Instead of following it up with something equally intense, the band stressed its pop side on In God We Trust. Though not quite as big a seller as To Hell with the Devil, the album quickly went gold and fell short of platinum. In God isn't a terrible album by any means, and it does have its moments (most notably, "Come to the Everlife" and "The Writing's on the Wall"), but some of the other material isn't very memorable. Quite often, Stryper sounds like just another MTV-friendly arena rock band. More devoted Stryper aficionados are the main listeners who should acquire this album. ~ Alex Henderson

| | Pleaseeasaur Yellow Pages CD (2003)
Say The Word album
$7.29 "Pizza Brothers & Sons Incorporated" is a nice representative sampling of Pleaseeasaur's Yellow Pages. As what sounds like a dance remix of a corporate training video soundtrack diddles in the background, vocalist JP Hasson demystifies the curiosities of the titular establishment ("He's from the wrong side of the tracks/He grew up spoiled to the max/But as you can clearly tell/We're brothers with one thing on our mind/That's pizza!"), rips on decor clichés like "pictures of Sicily," and generally cracks wise about bottom line-craving pizza parlors' blatant attempts at hominess. Is it good music? Well, it's definitely funny -- Hasson sounds like the geeky alter ego of Fun Lovin' Criminals' Huey doing a Frank Zappa impersonation with the aid of an estate sale Casio keyboard. He plays ladies man on "Let's Lay Down," but when the track ends abruptly after 47 seconds, it's easy to imagine Hasson and his pals laughing too hard to continue. There's the fun infomercial rock of "Bowl Noodle Hot," as well as "Warning: These Cobras Are Totally Cool," which never quite gets going but seems to be a reminder to not step on snakes because they're actually really fun guys. In between this sort of buffoonery are a series of apparent mood pieces, like "Robots Bite Down Gently" -- where a tense piano line duets with a Speak & Spell -- or closer "Gentle Results," which is three-plus minutes of cracked genius static cling keyboard loops. Pleaseeasaur doesn't purposefully aggravate like Atom & His Package or temper its shenanigans with actual rocking like the Dead Milkmen. In fact, ...

Say The Word CD music
$17.35 For more than two decades, the Gaither Vocal Band stood as the flagship ensemble of the Gaither music empire. As perhaps the most important link between modern CCM and classic Southern gospel groups of the Stamps variety, Bill Gaither's quartet has produced more gospel singing stars than the Yardbirds produced virtuoso rock guitarists. Steve Green, Larnelle Harris, Michael English, and Jonathan Pierce are just a few of the major names that have passed through the ranks, and each has brought a distinctive contribution to the band's evolution.
Like country counterparts the Oak Ridge Boys (who themselves started out singing gospel), the GVB combines old-time close-harmony singing with modern production techniques to create a sound both contemporary and filled with nostalgia. The smooth sound of 1999's "I Heard It First on the Radio" encapsulates the essence of the group's appeal; it's a splendidly mellow performance that is at once passionate and comforting. "Singing with the Saints" is edgier, taking a cue from contemporary Nashville records by matching the quartet's trademark sound with honky-tonk piano, a rock backbeat, and twangy guitar licks. THE BEST OF GAITHER VOCAL BAND comes as advertised, collecting the finest ...
