When it comes to inside playing versus outside playing, John McNeil has always believed in keeping his options open. The trumpeter can be quite lyrical and melodic, but that doesn't mean he won't get into dissonant outside playing when it's appropriate. McNeil has been greatly influenced by Miles Davis and Chet Baker, but that hasn't prevented him from learning some things from Don Cherry, Lester Bowie and Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre. And that open-mindedness is a definite advantage on Sleep Won't Come, which finds the trumpeter forming a drumless trio with pianist Jeff Jenkins and bassist Kent McLagan. Recorded in 2003 and 2004, this post-bop/avant-garde disc reminds us just how enjoyably unpredictable McNeil can be. McNeil is at his most lyrical on a tender, vulnerable performance of the traditional Irish song "The Water Is Wide," but he has no problem taking things in a more abstract, mildly avant-garde direction on "The Other World" and "Penumbra" -- mildly being the operative word. Sleep Won't Come, which is dominated by McNeil's own compositions, is not an exercise in complete atonality; compared to the work of a free jazz firebrand like saxophonist Charles Gayle (just to give one example), this release isn't all that left-of-center. Rather, Sleep Won't Come is an example of a talented, broad-minded improviser using both inside and outside playing to his creative advantage (with the inside ultimately having the upper hand). McNeil, regrettably, is not as well-known as he deserves to be in the jazz world, and this memorable date underscores the fact that he is well deserving of greater exposure. ~ Alex Henderson

Sleep Won't Come songs
$21.55 Trio Beyond is the name of the group that played at Queen Elizabeth's Hall in London, 2004. Jack DeJohnette initiated a project to pay tribute to the late Tony Williams' Lifetime -- with the late Larry Young on organ and guitarist John McLaughlin, all three were Miles alumni -- a band that, along with the Miles Davis band, spearheaded the jazz-rock fusion era. DeJohnette replaced Williams in the Davis group, and John Scofield is also a Miles alumnus; Larry Goldings had been approached by Williams in 1997 to put together an organ trio with a similar concept to Lifetime; Williams passed away shortly thereafter. ...

| | K-Drama Ceasefire Cincinnati: The EP CD (2007)
Sleep Won't Come CD music
$9.35 Music lovers around the world are screaming for a change in hip-hop music; due to the repetitive sounds currently being broadcasted by the millions of radio stations and video shows everyday. Here to accept this challenge is 21 year old, prodigy of poetry, k-Drama. With k-Dramas eccentric rhyme schemes; honest humor; and Biblically relative dialogue it is sure to attract a multitude of new listeners. Hailing from Cincinnati, Ohio, this young man is considered to have ambition like no other; and he certainly has the talent and humility to back it up. k-Dramas new album, Behind the Glory, is a well arranged anthology of the life and times of k-Drama. Behind the Glory, displays, with honesty, the many hardships he has faced in order to achieve his height of success in God. Each of his struggles is expressed differently, giving the audience a well rounded sense of his heart for God, in uplifting tunes. Songs such as, Honored, (featuring the Grammy nominated Canton Jones) are humbling, exalt the virtue of God, and give thanks for His grace and mercy. Other compositions like Just a Man expose his neglected childhood; which was the root of sins that are daily challenges until this day. Waste of Time has a funky, west coast, neo soul feel provided by the mastermind, Tony Stone. k-Drama unveils his testimony about his dealings with numerous girlfriends to fulfill the unquenchable void that only Christ can fill. He gets straight to the point of this song by chanting, if yall aint getting married, then yall shouldnt be together. Its a waste of time! Its a waste of time! This song has been celebrated by many including the Senior Director of New Birth Cathedrals Youth Development Department, Eddie Velez. Each song on, Behind the Glory stands out, but the one most widely embraced has been the high energy, bass thumping Teeter Totter, produced ...
