(12 Customer Reviews)
This program was recorded in December 2003 in Atlantic City and has become one of the most successful pldge events for PBS in recent years. This DVD features performances of the funkiest, smoothest, downright sexiest songs of the era, including 21 Top 10 hits by Patti LaBell, Earl Young's Trammps, Heatwave, George McCrae, Maxing Nightingale and Pure Gold, The Manhattans featuring Gerald Alston & Blue Lovett, The Stylistics, McFadden and Whitehead, Harold Melvin's Blue Note, Bloodstone, The Emotions, The Chi-Lites with Eugene Record, The Commodores, Yvonne Elliman, Tavares, Debbie & Joni Sledge of Sister Sledge, The Intruders, and Tyrone Davis. The music scene of the 1970s was enriched by the sweet sounds of soul, with an incredible array of talented artists making the crossover into the mainstream thanks to some classic songs. Fortunately many of the great soul performers were extensively captured on camera, and this release represents some of the best live acts of the decade. An extensive trawl of the Sony archives has turned up some incredible gems, including Patti LaBelle storming her way through "Lady Marmalade;" An earth shaking rendition of "Disco Inferno" by Earl Young's Trammps; The laidback, reggae-tinged sounds of "Rock Your Baby" by George McRae; The inspirational "Ain't No Stopping Us Now" by McFadden and Whitehead, and many others. For a real taste of the seventies soul scene, look no further than SUPERSTAR OF SEVENTIES SOUL LIVE.
