Like his frequent collaborator Keith Jarrett, Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek never stands still for long. Straight-ahead jazz with Miroslav Vitous (the fine UNIVERSAL SYNCOPATIONS), medieval music with the Hilliard Ensemble, film music, impressionistic jazz flavored by his homeland's folk and classical music--Garbarek has excelled at these and more. On IN PRAISE OF DREAMS, he's convened a typically atypical group to perform his vivid, intense compositions--classical violist Kim Kashkashian and rock/jazz drummer Manu Katche.
Garbarek's saxophone sound eerily conveys the essences of both Arctic windswept landscapes and radiant winter sunshine, while Kashkashian's beautifully warm viola, rich with vocal- and horn-like sonorities, provides cushioning and counterpoint. Katche delicately but firmly anchors the proceedings with his subtle, pattern-oriented drumming. Garbarek's compositions are haunting, atmospheric, and elegiac, not to mention concise--certainly not early-morning music, but for times of deep contemplation or relaxation, DREAMS is an ideal soundtrack.

Down Beat (p.80) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Kashkashian's gorgeous sound and the way it blends with Garbarek's saxes is a highlight, and Katche fits well with a style that's repetitive and trance-like." In Praise Of Dreams songs
$15.99 The two-disc set A NATURAL WOMAN collects the highlights of Carole King's eight-year tenure at Lou Adler's Ode Records. Of course, of the several albums she released between 1968 and 1976, one stands out above all others; TAPESTRY is an all-time classic, the definitive '70s singer/songwriter album and the epitome of piano rock. A NATURAL WOMAN treats the album with the respect it deserves, including it in its entirety.
What's remarkable about this 36-track collection is that as brilliant as songs like "It's Too Late," "Where You Lead" and "So Far Away" are, the rest of the set is nearly up to their level. In fact, listening to the songs from the follow-up RHYMES AND REASONS, it's remarkable that this album didn't match the stratospheric commercial success of its predecessor. The set also includes rarities like the 1972 movie song "Pocket Money" and four unreleased ...
