On 2004's MILK ME, the Beatnuts' seventh record, Juju declares he's "never been much for words," and while this is debatable (as both he and Psycho Les can break out some memorable lines), it's never been the lyrics that have drawn hip-hop followers to the Beatnuts by the thousands. Well known and sought after (as producers/remixers) long before Les and Juju (along with original member Fashion) took the mic themselves in the early 1990s, the Beatnuts create rhythms that are instantly recognizable, funky, melodic, and incredibly tight. MILK ME is no exception, and, indeed, may contain the duo's greatest production accomplishments since their pinnacle record, 1999's A MUSICAL MASSACRE.
As the music shifts styles and drops in and out, Les and Juju mix circus beats, flutes, and blues guitar riffs with swatches of old-school rap and '70s funk to form a thrilling hip-hop melange. The Beatnuts' lyrical fierceness is present, but, more often than not, the words fade into the backdrop, serving as another element to fuel the head-nodding beats. The Beatnuts boast a remarkable consistency, and MILK ME continues their tradition of releasing powerful, engaging hip-hop records.

Milk Me
$15.69 Principally recorded at D&D Studios, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Chairman Mao.
Rarely do hiphop acts stand the test of time. But Gang Starr's fusion of the underground killer beats of DJ Premier with Guru's smooth vocal stylings has always stayed true to its game. FULL CLIP compiles Gang Starr's ten-year run of hits. One of the things you notice about the double-disk set, packed as it is with such favorites as "DWYCK," "Just to Get A Rep," and "Mass Appeal," is that all 32 songs are home-runs. Every track here has earned ...

| | Juvenile Tha G-Code CD (1999)
Milk Me
$12.05 THA G-CODE is the second album released in 1999 by Juvenile, the sometime Hot Boy and one in a long line of hip-hop guns for hire. This third career release stays Juvenile's course of pounding, dynamic beats, as he sends much love to some, while ripping on those who deserve not to dwell inside his world of cars, girls, more cars, and money, money, money.
While his lyrical content is in keeping with the well-hewn gangsta tradition, the unique, at times arrhythmic beats are what set Juvenile apart. These are not your typical Dre-style overlush backdrops, nor are they the Master P variety of dizzyingly off-kilter bleats; what Juvenile raps over here are some genuinely new sounds. Particularly enticing are the breakdown on "Never Had S***" and the mixed-and-matched funk on "F*** That Nigga." There's a constant ...
| | Third World All The Way Strong CD (1983)
Milk Me
$6.29 1983's ALL THE WAY STRONG is probably Third World's most pop-oriented album. In the early '80s, after Bob Marley's untimely death, reggae came somewhat adrift as bands explored new arenas in an attempt to pick up Marley's mantle as the public face of the music. (As it turned out, none of them were entirely successful before the advent of electronic dancehall reggae in the mid-'80s changed the ...
| | 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Free CD (2002)
Milk Me
$6.79 Recorded between 1968 & 1973. Includes liner notes by Dave Thompson.
Some would argue that a single-disc collection doesn't do Free much justice, and that even a single-disc collection merits more than 11 songs (though this CD really isn't that short, adding up to 46 minutes). Still, for those who want a heavy dose of Free, there are more than one multi-disc set available. This is a pretty good sample of their 1968-1973 output, focusing understandably most heavily on Fire and Water (the 1970 album with "All Right Now") but including at least a track from all of the LPs they put out during the period. Those familiar primarily with the single "All Right Now" might be surprised at how moody, sometimes even downbeat, much of this blues-rock is. While Free lacked the oomph of Led Zeppelin, they were at the same time more concise and seriously emotional than many such bands of the era, at least on the songs selected for this disc. ~ Richie Unterberger

The curious omission of the two British hit singles "My Brother Jake" and "A Little Bit of Love," however, prevents this from being the most representative and concise best-of it could have been, though the hit "Wishing Well" ...

| | Ride Waves CD (2003)
Milk Me
$11.99 Recorded live between 1990-1994. Includes liner notes by Ride.
The only drawback of Waves, a compilation of Ride's sessions for BBC Radio 1, is that it begins in a tidal wave and ends in a puddle. Though it's sequenced like all BBC-session and singles-oriented discs should be sequenced -- chronologically, from earliest to latest -- its arc mirrors that of the band's albums, as well as OX4: The Best of Ride, starting off as spirited and adventurous and slowing to "mature" and safe. This disc is the best support for the argument that Ride's vitality ...
