| | Meredith Brooks Shine CD Meredith Brooks Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
Originally out in 2002, her album "Bad, Bad One" quickly fell by the wayside when her label Gold Circle shut down almost immediately after releasing the set. Now, the project is getting another shot -- thanks to TV talk show host Dr. Phil McGraw. McGraw selected "Shine," the first single originally released in 2002, as the theme song to the upcoming season of his syndicated talk show.
Shine is a retitled, relaunched version of Meredith Brooks' 2002 album Bad Bad One. That record made little impression upon its May release that year, apart from the single "Shine" sneaking onto the lower reaches of the Adult Top 40 charts, and the album sat dormant for nearly two years, when, out of nowhere, the popular television therapist Dr. Phil adopted the song as his new theme song for his new fall season. So, Bad Bad One was re-released on Kissing Booth/SLG under the new title Shine. The title was moved to the pole position and the rest of the album was shuffled around, with the new "Dr. Phil Remix" -- which is not only a remix, but an edit, clocking in at well under two minutes -- added to the end of the record. For listeners who were won over to Brooks through the Dr. Phil show, this is clearly the way to go, but anybody who already owns Bad Bad One will find this superfluous. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Kentucky Headhunters Soul CD (2003)
Shine CD music
$9.99 The Kentucky Headhunters have spent much of their career trying to convince people they're not just another country outfit with scraggly hair, and if their pronounced Southern boogie rock tendencies won't do it, this album might. Soul finds the Headhunters indulging in their fondness for vintage rhythm & blues sounds, with the band adding keyboards, horn players, and female backing harmonies to give the performances an appropriate late-'60s/early-'70s ambience. Of course, no matter how hard they try, the Kentucky Headhunters still end up sounding like...the Kentucky Headhunters, especially since they wrote nearly all of the tracks on board (and no matter how hard you try, you just can't write a soul tune about meeting Carl Perkins, nor should anyone try). But as a change-up from their usual style, Soul works better than you might expect; the bluesy undercurrents of Southern rock have given the Kentucky Headhunters a leg up on embracing a more R&B-influenced sound, the songs are solid, vocalist Doug Phelps ...
| | Johnny Winter I'm A Bluesman CD (2004)
Shine music CDs
$11.69 On guitar-slinger Johnny Winter's 2004 outing, I'M A BLUESMAN, his spicy style of playing keeps with a legacy dating back to the late 1960s, when he was playing on the club circuit of tiny Beaumont, Texas. Tapping Roy Buchanan/Albert Collins producer Dick Shurman to man the console, Winter wisely brings his touring band into the studio with him.
Although the albino axe-wielder's guitar tone sounds oddly compressed, his still-impressive playing does much to dispel any distractions. Such is the case when the sixtysomething Texan plays the spurned-lover card, be it on the organ-soaked howler "Cheatin' Blues" or the subtler, but no less suspicious, "I Smell Smoke." Despite nearly being eligible for Social Security, the rail-thin Winter still opens it up, as evidenced by the howling and crackling slide guitar adorning ...
| | Restless Heart Still Restless CD (2004)
Shine songs
$9.25 Still Restless is the first album of all new studio material in 14 years by Restless Heart. Little has changed since their self-titled debut album was released in 1985; their perfect harmonies and smooth country-rock arrangements remain intact. Basically, Restless Heart picked up where they left off in the mid-'90s, sticking with their strong points instead of radically changing their musical direction. Highlights include the mandolin-dominated "Feel My Way to You," the soft ...
| | John Mellencamp Freedom's Road CD (2007)
Shine album
$12.49 John Mellencamp's heartland rock has attracted as many critics as fans, but regardless of the listener's stance, 2007's FREEDOM'S ROAD makes one thing abundantly clear: Mellencamp is very, very good at what he does. The artist has used the five years since his last album of all-new material to full effect, crafting the songs, sound, and themes of FREEDOM ROAD to perfection.
Mellencamp's usual mixture of rock, folk, blues, and country is here in full force, but it feels refined to a sharp edge on both rousing, anthemic tracks ("The Americans") and haunting atmospheric ones (like "Jim Crow," which features Joan Baez on guest vocals). The song "Our Country," popularized in a truck commercial, ...
| | John Fogerty Revival CD (2007) Digipak
Shine CD music
$13.75 Like cowboy hats and political scandal, John Fogerty is a timeless American tradition. Ever since he led Creedence Clearwater Revival to their status as America's first great heartland rock band, John Fogerty has been the musical equivalent of Henry Fonda, Gary Cooper, and JFK rolled into one. Through CCR's breakup and his subsequent solo career, Fogerty's music has adhered to its original template of swampy blues-rock with splashes of country/folk twang, and 2007's REVIVAL is no exception.
Even after four decades of recording, Fogerty's voice sounds remarkably fresh and unchanged. The sound that emanates from the opening cut, "Don't You Wish it Was True," is as pure and unsullied as the utopian wish conveyed by the lyrics. And for a man who spent years refusing to play his back catalog and enduring litigation ...

| | Sleater-Kinney Hot Rock CD (1999)
Shine songs
$13.49 With 1997's DIG ME OUT, Sleater-Kinney were about as mainstream-popular as decidedly dissonant indie-rock girls could be. As the archetypal riot-grrrl collective, the trio found themselves emblazoned on the cover of all the requisite magazines and in practically every fashionable up-and-comer's list. Which begged the eternal question of the follow-up, and how to make one. Luckily, Sleater-Kinney's appeal lies primarily in its iconoclasm, and with THE HOT ROCK ...

| | Fairport Convention Moat On The Ledge CD (1982)
Shine music CDs
$9.09 Fairport Convention officially disbanded in 1979, only to become the hosts of a yearly folk festival/reunion concert every August in England. This album is taken from their August 15, 1981 show, featuring core original Fairport members Simon Nicol and Richard Thompson plus original female singer Judy Dyble, plus later members Dave Swarbrick, Dave Pegg, Dave Mattacks, and Bruce Rowland, and it's a good recapitulation of the band's style, with such numbers new to their repertoire as Bob Dylan's "Country Pie" and Thompson's "Woman or a Man." The presence of Dyble alone was something of a history lesson for newer fans, most of whom were scarcely aware of her participation in the group at the start, ...
