(5 Customer Reviews)
Amon Amarth's fifth full-length isn't so different than its 2002 predecessor, The Crusher. Musically, Fate of Norns is Spartan death metal built on epic, anthemic melodies, a perfect example of the Iron Maiden/death metal fusion tagged the "New Wave of Swedish Heavy Metal." And lyrically it's still full of Viking imagery, as songs like "Valkyries Ride" and "The Pursuit of Vikings" attest. It's the same theme that these guys have been hammering at since their 1996 debut mini-album, Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds. It's also a theme that literally hundreds of other Scandinavian bands have hammered at too, most of them leaving it a hackneyed corpse ready for the pyre. Which is where Amon Amarth have set themselves apart. These aren't just songs written about Vikings, they are written by Vikings. They're ready for death in "Arson" where one of five left to burn survives and comes back for revenge in that tracks' sequel, "Once Sealed in Blood." Blood lust themes aren't unusual, but Amon Amarth tackle them with a depth often lacking from their contemporaries. Which brings up the most intriguing track, "Fate of Norns": "No man should have to bury his child/Yet this has been my share/The tears I shed run bitter and wild/It's a heavy burden to bear." A knotty subject for a band and a style more given to crushing skulls than tears, but that kind of depth is what Amon Amarth have brought to Fate of Norns and what makes it stand out in a sea of barbarian pretenders. ~ Wade KerganCMJ (p.20) - "[It] elicits plenty of headbanging." | Fate Of Norns Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) Clearly A fantstic Death Metal Band This is a really good Band and one of there best albums I really Like the song Fate Of the Norns! Submitted by Wyatt (Osh,Ont,Can) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Fresh The CD is great, i bought the CD because i had never listened to Viking Metal, and after listening to these guys i was very pleased. Its not crazy-complex or fast, but it makes you headbang and the lyrics are catchy. Fate of Norns and Pursuit of Vikings are the best 2 songs, Where Death Seems to Dwell would be the best if it weren't for the really slow first 2-3 minutes. Great CD though. Metal Gods This is one of those amazing albums that you can't stop listening to. Amon Amarth sends you on a journey song after song of bloody quests and pillaging. Get ready for some insane head banging as soon as the grinding guitar blows your mind. Submitted by BLR (OR, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

2004 Metal Album of the Year! Incredible! The undisputed kings of Viking metal have done it again. A relentless onslaught of power, melody and infectious song writing. Johann Hegg has never been better with his dual vox style of raspy and growly. Fredrik Andersson lays his claim to the throne of metal skin pounders with another suberb performance. Exactly how many limbs does this man have? The whole band has never been tighter with guitar melodies and solos to die for! Top it off with a flawless Berno Paulsson(Berno Studio,Sweden) production and this is one of the "must buy" metal albums of all time. Submitted by bigt61 (Gainesville, VA) Was This Review Helpful? Fate Of Norns music CDs
$43.09 This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING, the U.S. debut of London-based trio Dum Dums, contains that rarest of combinations--good songs and lots of creativity. Sprinkling their songs with an indie rock vibe and plentiful doses of humor, Dumdums created quite a buzz for themselves without major market radio play in America.
"Everything" and "Can't Get You Out of My Thoughts" are one part Green Day and two parts Supergrass, while some of the other songs that make IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING a worthy major label debut are "Caught Me in a Trap," "Until My Ship Comes In," and "Killing Me With Kindness."
The British trio plays good-natured pop-punk on its American debut, which includes the singles "Everything" and "Can't Get You Out of My Thoughts," which made some noise in Britain. Ah, the lot of the early 21st century punk band, coming of age in a time when, at least people are told, mankind is in the midst of an unprecedented era of prosperity. So what does that leave to complain about? They find lots, of course, including abusive bosses, monotonous jobs (a recurrent theme), and romantic frustration ("Wanted an airbrushed blonde, with gorgeous teeth/Ended up with the girl at the end of the street"). They vary the accents more than many such bands ...
| | Lake Of Tears Neonai CD (2003)
Fate Of Norns songs
$16.05 Lake of Tears' fifth album, The Neonai, is also set to be their last, with singer/guitarist Daniel Brennare announcing that he will be moving in a different direction, possibly with a new project also named Neonai. And what a pity too, since many would argue that the band was still in its prime. Considering this is the end of the line makes Lake of Tears' trajectory all the more interesting to look back on -- especially since their drastic evolution from depressive doom metal to spacy, post-Pink Floyd goth rock took place without compromising the quality of their music, something other respectable bands like Paradise Lost and Tiamat have failed miserably at. Brought home by the album's fantastical, psychedelic artwork (a bright, colorful, mirror-opposite of the dark collages often used by Cathedral), the truth is that there's little left in Lake of Tears' sound that even resembles heavy metal. Sure, the guitars are usually heavy in tone, but ...
| | Armageddon CD (1975) Remastered; Digipak
Fate Of Norns album
$16.29 Cynics who perceive many super-groups as nothing more than bloated extrapolations of, at times, perfectly mundane musical components, can back up their assumptions with Armageddon's eponymous debut from 1975. The first and final spawn of the would-be-super-group featuring former Yardbird vocalist Keith Relf, erstwhile Captain Beyond drummer Bobby Caldwell, ex-Steamhammer guitarist Martin Pugh, and Relf's Renaissance partner, bassist Louis Cennamo, the album contains a meager five tracks -- four of which extend beyond the eight-minute barrier due to bouts of arguably unnecessary, self-indulgent waffling. On the other hand, this was ...
