Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid -- the name conjures up images of comic book mayhem involving chisel-faced explorers and a race of supernatural serpents locked in an epic battle for global domination -- is the kind of late-summer "studio filler" that demands an over the top soundtrack. Newcomer Nerida Tyson-Chew does her best to fill the -- almost straight-to-video -- sequel to the modestly successful giant snake caper with a sense of tropical urgency and B-movie dread, but lacks the melodic bombast to fully deliver. For the most part her colorful score succeeds in keeping the audience focused on the clear and present danger experienced by a group of anonymous actors in Gap shorts facing certain death, but to listen to the soundtrack independently from the film would cause certain sleep. The composer's autopilot has been engaged, and despite her attempts to lighten the mood with the occasional Eno-esque soundscape, Tyson-Chew's textbook "tension/release tension" formula only illuminates an artist saving her energy for better scoring prospects. ~ James Christopher Monger

The chiming, acoustic sound of "Hard Sun," the lead-off single from this collection of solo Eddie Vedder material, might lead fans to wonder where the roaring guitars and grunge-drenched energy of Pearl Jam has gone. Yet the large-scale, anthemic quality of the song, its forceful, three-chord progression, and Vedder's familiar gruff and soaring vocals reveal that the singer hasn't strayed far from home turf.
INTO THE WILD, a soundtrack to the Sean Penn film of the same name, features 11 original tunes from Vedder that largely fit the mold of "Hard Sun." The songs are acoustic, wistful, earnest and open-hearted, yet boast arrangements and a production style that favors a grand sonic sweep over intimacy, the sound of unique personal dreams writ large (a perfect fit with the film's story, which concerns a young man's hitch-hiking odyssey).
