| | Kevin Naquin Au Coup D'Eclair CD Kevin Naquin Discography of CDs
The second album by Kevin Naquin & the Ossun Playboys was originally self-released in 2001 in a fairly small initial pressing that sold out shortly after the album won the 2002 Cajun French Music Association award for album of the year. When Swallow Records signed Naquin and band in 2004, they reissued Au Coup d'Eclair (At the Strike of Lightning) alongside the group's fourth album, Never Satisfied: Jamais Satisfait, and the juxtaposition reveals how much the Ossun Playboys' sound has changed in a relatively short time. Au Coup d'Eclair (At the Strike of Lightning) is a much more traditional-sounding album than the later effort, leaning toward zydeco instead of swamp pop influences, and with a much less prominent rhythm section. The song selection consists almost entirely of those two staples of the Cajun repertoire, the waltz and the two-step, with the exception of one straight-ahead cover of the Chuck Berry classic "Promised Land." Highlights include a sprightly version of the Clifton Chenier classic "Tante Na Na" and a sweet instrumental, "Lovers Waltz." ~ Stewart Mason Au Coup D'Eclair Music | List Price | $16.98 (You save $3.19) | | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, World CDs, Cajun | | Label | Swallow | | Orig Year | 2004 | | CD Universe Part number | 6766691 | | Catalog number | 6183 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Aug 10, 2004 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo |

| | Bill Neely Texas Law & Justice CD (1974)
Au Coup D'Eclair music CDs
$13.59 Six of these 20 tracks (nine of which were previously unreleased) are identified as having been recorded at Neely's home in April 1973; no dates are given for the other cuts, except for the notation that all "were recorded on previous occasions." Probably they weren't recorded that long before the April 1973 material, given the general similarity of the sound throughout the disc. Anyway, this is quite good down-home country music with hints of rockabilly and blues, far above the usual standards of modestly produced folkloric sessions by musicians who worked almost totally outside of the commercial recording scene. There's really cool primitive, swirling electric guitar reverb, attaining an almost organ-like timbre in some respects; it's the kind of low-budget effect that the best modern studios would probably find impossible to replicate. Sometimes he gets assistance from a second guitarist and bassist, but there are never drums, and sometimes it's just him and his guitar. Neely sings and writes (all but one of the tracks is original) movingly, and without histrionics, about death, justice, Texas, religion ("Satan's Burning Hell" is the opener), and regret, getting into lighter moods on "Rock & Roll Baby" and the instrumental "Pflugerville Boogie." R. Powell St. John, who wrote some material for the 13th Floor Elevators, ...
| | Geraldo Azevedo O Grande Encontro V.2 - Serie Ao Vivo CD (1997) (Import) Brazil
Au Coup D'Eclair songs
$18.39 The trio Geraldo Azevedo, Ze Ramalho, and Elba Ramalho peform a series of lovely acoustic renditions of Brazilian tunes on O GRANDE ENCONTRO V.2--SERIE AO VIVO. "Disparada," "Miragens," and "Erternas Ondas," are among the songs here.
After the meeting happened in 1996 among Elba Ramalho, Geraldo Azevedo, Zé Ramalho, and Alceu Valença, a new encounter was re-enacted the following year without Valença. While the previous album was recorded live, this one received studio production. Always focusing on the Northeastern production, the album opens with an excellent arrangement of the jewel "Disparada" (Geraldo Vandré/Theo), where the distinctive voice of Geraldo Azevedo attracts the attention. "O Princípio do Prazer" is a hopeful and danceable xote, where Ramalho is subtler and more delicate than usual. "Banquete de Signos" makes reference to the title right in the introduction with Indian sitars. The power ...

| | Ben Lennon and Tony O'Connell Rossinver Braes CD (2008)
Au Coup D'Eclair music CDs
$22.79 A new album from Ben Lennon, fiddle, and Tony O\'Connell, concertina. Ben Lennon is a legendary figure in traditional Irish music circles, a fiddler from Co. Leitrim and although almost fifty years separate Ben from his fellow musician on this album, Tony O\'Connell from west Limerick, there is an undeniable musical connection between them. David Lennon, Ben\'s son, says in his introduction to the CD: 'Tony is probably the most empathetic musician I have heard my father play with. There is an understanding of phrasing, time and nuance that one finds only rarely in any musical form.\' This is O\'Connell\'s second album; his first album was recorded with another Leitrim fiddler, Andy Morrow, and was released to critical acclaim in 2005. The album came second in the top ten albums of 2005 of highly-respected traditional Irish music reviewer Earle Hitchner of the Irish Echo, second, interestingly, to the album Within a Mile of Kilty released on the Cló Iar-Chonnachta label that year and featuring Ben and Charlie Lennon, as well as four other superb ...
