NHE's third Delmark CD is a tribute to trumpeter Ameen Muhammad who made his transition on Feb. 28th, 2003, not long after the release of "Capetown Shuffle - Live At The HotHouse" (DMK #545). "Last summer, Dawkins--a brilliant Chicago saxophonist-bandlea
Tributee: Ameen Muhammad. Ernest Dawkins' New Horizons Ensemble: Darius Savage (double bass); Steve Berry , Ernest Dawkins, Maurice Brown , Isaiah Spencer. Personnel: Ernest Dawkins (alto saxophone, tenor saxophone); Maurice Brown (trumpet); Steve Berry (trombone); Isaiah Spencer (drums). Audio Mixer: Steve Wagner . Liner Note Author: Aarón Cohen. Recording information: Riverside Studio, Chicago, IL (03/21/2004-03/22/2004). Photographer: Peter Amft. Alto and tenor saxophonist Ernest Dawkins' New Horizons Ensemble is constantly full of surprises on Mean Ameen, a tribute to the late trumpeter Ameen Muhammad. While "3-D" is a bit reminiscent of the free bop of Ornette Coleman's Free Jazz, Dawkins' tenor sometimes hints at Archie Shepp, "Haiti" sounds like the "small instruments" explorations of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, and "The Messenger" is an excellent tribute to Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. These musicians are clearly talented in several styles, play with open minds, and react quickly to each other's ideas. The exciting closer, "Buster and the Search for the Human Genome," wraps up a superior outing of colorful and explorative yet surprisingly accessible jazz. Highly recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
Down Beat (p.73) - "[T]here is a sense that we have been taken place not unlike those visited when seeing the band live." JazzTimes (p.88) - "The performances are fairly straight-ahead but enormously creative within slightly loosened conventions of small group jazz..." Ernest Dawkins Mean Ameen Songs Mean Ameen Review

Mean Ameen
$31.25 In this dazzling epic from Akira Kurosawa, a petty thief named Kagemusha (Tatsuya Nakadai) gets saved from a death sentence because he resembles the warlord Shingen Takeda (also Nakadai). The warlord has been fighting two other leaders for control of 16th-century Japan and impersonators often take his place during battles to put him out of harm's way. Because of Kagemusha's strong physical similarities to the warlord, he's a perfect choice for a "shadow warrior." However, the arrangement suddenly changes when Shingen gets fatally wounded while watching a battle. Adhering to Shingen's final wish, the warlord's men keep the death a secret, and Kagemusha struggles to transform himself from a criminal into a leader.
KAGEMUSHA marked a welcome return for the legendary director, who had not made a movie since 1974. Nakadai, a supporting player in earlier Kurosawa ...
